Incredible Value in a Royer Ribbon Mic

At Sweetwater, when we want the sweet, silky sound of a ribbon mic, we'll likely reach for a Royer. We've come to rely on the company for high-fidelity ribbon mics that stand up to daily deployment in a variety of critical recording studio and live sound applications, and they've nailed it again with the R-10. The Royer R-10 delivers a beautifully balanced sound field with a flat frequency response and an impressive maximum SPL of 160dB at 1kHz, so you can close-mic loud sources without fear of overload. The R-10 is the choice for electric and acoustic guitars, brass, strings, drums, cymbals, piano, vocals, and more. Its figure-8 polar pattern also captures ambience beautifully, which makes it excellent for room miking. The Royer R-10 is a value-packed, state-of-the-art ribbon microphone that deserves a place in your mic locker.

Smooth, velvety, and high fidelity

The R-10 design employs several Royer innovations, including an internally shockmounted ribbon transducer and a multilayer windscreen. The R-10's shockmounting effectively isolates the ribbon element from vibration and increases ribbon durability. The layered windscreen provides excellent protection from plosives and air blasts while reducing proximity effect, so you can close-mic sources without excessive bass buildup. The microphone's smooth frequency response, phase linearity, and lack of self-distortion is a perfect antidote to the unforgiving nature of modern digital recording. And its velvety, high-fidelity rendition of instruments and vocals is a sheer delight to the ears.

State-of-the-art Royer ribbon technology

The R-10 utilizes Royer's patented offset-ribbon technology and low-mass aluminum ribbon element. The mic's custom-designed impedance-matching transformer minimizes saturation, and its open-grille design minimizes standing waves and their attendant comb-filtration effects. The transducer's flux-frame design and rare-earth neodymium magnets create a powerful magnetic field that increases sensitivity while reducing stray magnetic radiation. It all adds up to a superior modern ribbon microphone that no recording studio or live rig should be without. And given the R-10's delightfully gentle price tag, we might add that having a pair of them is extremely useful.

Go ahead: close-mic that loud source

A ludicrously loud high-gain guitar amp firing point-blank at your precious, delicate ribbon mic: an engineer's nightmare. You've probably heard stories about vintage ribbon mics tragically cut to shreds by high SPLs — or even sustaining damage from a stiff breeze. It's true — the ribbons of yore were notoriously fragile. But in the late 1990s, David Royer essentially re-invented the ribbon mic as a robust modern recording tool. The Royer R-10's maximum SPL rating (measured at 1kHz) is an impressive 160dB. In practical terms, that means you can place your R-10 directly in front of a dimed robo-stack without microphone distortion or damaging the ribbon. We don't recommend trying this with other ribbon mics, but the Royer R-10 can take it. With that said, we do advise caution with regard to forceful direct blasts of air — such as from a hole cut in a bass drumhead. You can achieve a punchy, modern kick sound by using a dynamic mic in the hole, combined with an R-10 a foot or two away and angled down.

The R-10: it's like having two mics in one

Placed near a source, the rear of the R-10 is brighter than the front side. The difference in the sound is somewhat like blending 10% of a condenser mic in with your ribbon mic signal. This can be extremely useful when you record acoustic guitars, vocals, and other sound sources that would benefit from a little more top end. Royer's offset-ribbon design situates the ribbon element closer to the front of the cage, which also permits higher SPL handling at the front (logo) side, as well as the option of a brighter response for quieter sources on the rear side (optimally 3 feet or closer, with the polarity reversed).

Royer R10 Ribbon Microphone Features:

  • High SPL handling — perfect for close-miking electric guitar, brass, and other instruments
  • Multilayer windscreen provides effective protection for the ribbon element
  • Internally shockmounted ribbon transducer for increased durability
  • Passive circuit with custom transformer minimizes high-SPL overload
  • Vanishingly low residual noise
  • Ribbon element impervious to heat and humidity
  • Flat frequency response with no high-frequency peaks, ringing, or phase shifts
  • Equal sensitivity from front or back of element

Incredible Microphone Worth Every Cent!

Royer don't disappoint when it comes to ribbon mics, and the R-10 is no exception. Built tough (though you should still handle it carefully because duh), it comes with its own screw-on clip/shockmount, cloth sock, and case. It looks beautiful and sounds as good as it looks.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: for quieter sounds like vocals, fingerpicked steel/nylon acoustic guitars, and some percussion, a mic preamp is definitely required. Ribbon mics have low-gain output, and it's wise to send them through preamps that can boost the signal to optimal line level. Luckily Royer had this in mind and made a preamp specifically for ribbon mics: the dBooster In-Line Signal Booster. I'm already planning on getting this for my R-10
However, for louder signals like amplified guitars, drums, loud strummed acoustics, a preamp isn't needed but it would still be safe to have one.
Sound-wise, the R-10 is amazing. It really captures acoustic guitars better than any other mic I've used. It doesn't bring out too much high end jangle I've always had to EQ out. In fact, when I recorded my steel-string acoustic with the R-10 the only EQ I did was attenuate the mid-range and low-cut. Everything else sounded fine. It also records percussion really well. I recorded tampourine, shakers, clavs, and maracas with the R-10 and the sound is really well-balanced. A nice warm, but present sound with barely any background noise usually easily picked up by higher output condensers.
When recording vocals, I found it to be quieter in output (again, that's without the preamp), but it still sounded nice and warm and very close to the actual sound.
As all ribbon mics, the R-10 is bi-directional, and interestingly the back of the mic has more high-frequency response than the front. This was intentional, and it actually works really well. Plus, if you wanted to record with the back end, you just flip the phase and it's good to go. The R-10 was built with a modern mindset, so you're actually able to mic a guitar amp with this baby and not worry about the sound pressure damaging the ribbon. It works extremely well as both the main cab mic and as a room mic.
All in all, this is very much worth the price. You're really not going to find a ribbon mic this inexpensive with this kind of quality. Do yourself a favor and grab it.

Fantastic Mic!

Loving the R-10 Ribbon Mic so far! Using it primarily as a secondary Mic for, of all things, vocals. Very pleased with the performance of the Royer..and, as always, my friends at Sweetwater got it to me in record time!

Welcome to ribbon mics (incredible!!)

I've been growing my mic collection as I'm building out my home studio and I've always wanted a R-121. That being said I have no business owning that high end of a ribbon mic yet since it takes some experience and knowledge to know how to take care of it and not destroy the ribbon. The R-10 is an excellent entrance into the world of Royer and ribbons. This mic is beautifully built and the quality is awesome like I would expect from Royer. It's a bit smaller than I thought it would be but no worries there. Sound-wise it is a super cool addition to my condensers and tube mics--it sounds great on guitar amps alongside an SM-57. It brings out the natural tone and character of amps without over-coloring. It can also take a sonic beating which is great for learning ribbon mics. Jump on this one!

Great for Wind Instruments

This mic is now one of my new favorites. I mostly record acoustic instruments, especially wind instruments and this mic gives me the most wonderful sound. It's quite mellow which I find to be good when recording instruments with a high dynamic range. I use the R10 for the body of the sound then use a small condenser to capture the high end. It's also very warm without sounding too dark or muddy. Very little eq is needed to make it sound great. If you need to record brass, woodwinds, strings, pianos, or guitars this is 100% the mic for you. Fantastic.

Great

The R10 is a brilliant little mic for the money. I've found it really shines on Acoustic Guitars (both steel and nylon), often favoring the reverse of the mic. It also records percussion very well indeed. Enjoyed it on Guitar Cab too, but it didn't speak to me quite like the Acoustic Guitar recordings. Handles EQ very well and plays very nicely with my main condenser mic when they are paired up. Definitely recommend this mic.

When Royer Labs got their Technical Grammy in 2013, they couldn't wait to come to Sweetwater to show it off. One thing they impressed on us was how much our amazing relationship helped to get the word out about their products. Of course, getting the word out about their amazing ribbon mics was easy - we've never regretted recommending them. In fact, it wouldn't be immodest to say that Royer was one of the biggest forces behind the ribbon mic's recent return to popularity. In addition to providing greater clarity and transparency to the classic ribbon sound, Royer's designs dramatically reduced the bulk and weight of these mics. That's made it easy for the engineers at Sweetwater Studios to use Royer ribbons for close-miking amps and getting deep into drum kits and acoustic pianos. We absolutely love them, and we're sure you will too.
