Roland’s acclaimed SuperNATURAL sound engine

Not many digital pianos get as close to sounding and feeling like an acoustic instrument as Roland’s FP-60X. With its SuperNATURAL sound engine, you get an intimate and customizable connection with your keyboard. Each note can be shaped to respond to your touch and dynamics with the tone and harmonic accuracy you desire. Drawing upon Roland’s rich sonic legacy, the FP-60X’s SuperNATURAL sound engine gives you authentic pianos and electric pianos that can take you from pristine sparkle to funky grit — plus a curated selection of premium acoustic and electronic sounds from Roland’s historic legacy.

PHA-4 keyboard provides authentic grand piano feel

The FP-60X sports Roland’s PHA-4 Standard keyboard featuring the company’s acclaimed Progressive Hammer Action with Escapement. In the FP-60X, advanced sensor technologies work together with the SuperNATURAL Piano engine to provide performance and playing expressiveness that rivals the finest acoustic grand pianos. With the appearance, Ivory Feel texture, and functionality of keyboards found on Roland’s flagship pianos, the FP-60X’s PHA-4 keyboard gives you an exceptionally natural and satisfying playing experience.

Built-in speaker system fills the room with full, rich sound

You don’t need to worry about carting around or hooking up an external sound system when you’re playing your Roland FP-60X. That’s because Roland outfitted this instrument with an excellent multi-amped stereo speaker system. The speakers are strategically integrated into the FP-60X chassis, so you and your listeners are enveloped in the lush soundscape of your performance. Small touches matter, and at Sweetwater, we particularly appreciate how the FP-60X’s onboard 3-band equalizer easily adjusts its sound to fit the venue.

Roland FP 60x

Love the keyboard action and improved sound over my entry level keyboard. Still learning all the features.
Music background: Not much 3 years of piano as a youngster
Rated 3/5

Great keyboard but flawed

I am new to the world of keyboards/digital pianos, but have played guitar for close to 25 years. This keyboard was purchased as a demo, and was purchased with the furniture stand, triple pedal unit, and duet sized bench. I have been practicing piano pretty religiously for about a month, so any thoughts that I have take with a grain of salt. That said here are my first basic thoughts:

Pros
* Build Quality - Every component is solid and feels very well built. The buttons and sliders have a very tactile feel.
* Keyboard Action and Feel - They feel great to me
* User Interface - Easy to navigate through sounds, save settings etc.
* Connectivity - Bluetooth Audio and Midi, mic input, etc. all nice to have.
* Synth, Pad, and Organ Sounds - These sounds are authentic sounding, and fun to experiment with.
* Dual Voice Sounds - The sliders for the different parts allow for some really great blended sounds.
* Roland Piano App - Easy to connect, and control your piano that said there are cons to this app that I will describe below.

Cons
* Piano sounds - Immediate piano sound does not impress, finagled some settings and now have a sound that I'm pretty pleased with. That said, I believe the CFX sample from the Yamaha PSR E373 I bought for my 3 year old sounds much better. However, I have found that after adjusting the touch settings, the eq, adapting the strength of my key strikes, it gets a fairly legitimate sound. It would be desirable though for any mid-priced instrument in 2022 to have a piano sound that blows you out of the water right out of the box. If an inexpensive Yamaha keyboard can do that, a Roland should be able to do just the same. Unfortunately, it does not.
* Electric Piano Sounds - I think these sounds might be more legitimate than the PSR E373, but you have got to work your hands to really make it sound good. I have found some instruments pretty much play themselves when you have a good sound at your fingertips. The electric piano sounds found here, require me to use a pad underneath for a little cushion.
* Uneven Volumes between sounds - Some sounds are extremely quiet compared to others. The pianos are much quieter than the Synths. Coming from the guitar world, Roland should know that if you don't have that much talent, you can always blow them away with volume. Overall, I would have wished that this piano was just louder in general, but especially the piano sounds.
* No built in Rhythyms - There should be basic drum beats on the keyboard without require connecting to a phone or tablet
* The App Learning Features - Sub-par learning features. No Looping method to repeat measures in sheet music. No waiting method. No zoom in to view just one or two bars at a time.
* The App Accompaniments - Very few styles, and the auto-accompaniment does not work over bluetooth, there is too much latency. I can forgive the latency, and eventually pick up a cable to hardwire the connection, but I hope Roland updates the app with more styles, that could easily transform this feature to a huge positive.
* The App Built in Music and Lesson Materials - Everything is pretty much locked behind a paywall. It's fairly inexpensive, but Yamaha doesn't charge any annual subscription for a superior product with their Smart Pianist app. Roland is bonkers if they believe charging for this content is a good business plan. That said, it should have way more material available, and if someone buys a >$ instrument, there should be at least a one year free trial, if not two years. Roland gives you thirty days, and you have to remember to unsubscribe if you don't want to be charged.
* Lack of effects - Coming from the world of Guitar, I thought that Roland and Boss being part of the same company that there would be way more options for effects and effect manipulation. Not so. The ambience feature is nice, but I would appreciate more options to add effects to the sound. Things like auto-wahs, delays, and phasers are nowhere to be found, and would be greatly appreciated. It's tragic, because I know Boss has the technology to easily incorporate these things into a device such as this piano. I can understand that they might not want to confuse or overwhelm the parent or basic piano playing consumer who they are marketing this to, but for a guitar player, there is pretty much zilch in terms of effects.

Overall, even with the cons kind of outweighing the pros in a lot of ways, I do love the piano. I wanted a solid build quality that was aesthetically appealing with modern connectivity features. It has all of that in spades. I hope Roland decides to fix many things about their app, especially the learning features and pricing model. They should just take the L and drop the subscription plan, or modify the subscription plan for access to modern, non-public domain sheet music for popular songs. Also, I just assumed that the piano sound would be good enough for a noob like me, and felt I could get a real nice piano without paying $ more for a Yamaha P515 or a Roland FP90x. In hindsight, I should have bought the Yamaha P515. The modeling might be awesome on an FP90x, but after hearing the FP60x in person, I wouldn't trust them to make the modeling right. That said, I plan on keeping this because there is a lot I do like, and it's not the instrument, it's the player.
Music background: 25 years on Guitar/One month at piano

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
