Vintage Soul, Modern Playability

The Paul Reed Smith McCarty 594 solidbody electric guitar provides a new take on their important McCarty line, gracefully blending elements of a fine vintage instrument with modern building processes and appointments. The McCarty 594's TCI-tuned 58/15 LT pickups offer up both bell-like humbucking and single-coil tones. PRS paid extra attention to the neck, designing an asymmetrical Pattern Vintage neck carve with a 24.594" scale length. And the updated bridge and vintage-style non-locking tuners further ensure you'll be enjoying the best the McCarty 594 has to offer.

A historic pedigree

Ted McCarty had his hand in some of the most legendary designs in electric guitar history, including the original humbucking pickup. McCarty began mentoring Paul Smith, and the original Paul Reed Smith McCarty model debuted in the 1990s. Since that time, the popular model has been rereleased with updated specs and continues to be a popular line for the company. This McCarty 594 represents the latest incarnation of that model, complete with updated pickups, a different neck feel, and an electronics arrangement similar to the vintage guitars McCarty helped pioneer.

Fine-tuned pickups for exceptional musicality and tone

When you plug the PRS McCarty 594 solidbody electric guitar into your favorite amplifier, you will be enveloped in a rich and decidedly vintage tone. The sound is similar to the warm, clear tones that have propelled the original 58/15 pickups to the top of many of Sweetwater guitarists' favorite PAF-style pickup list. But these pickups are treated to PRS's TCI (Tuned Capacitance and Inductance) tuning, which means the team at PRS has used their years of know-how to sculpt the sound to be perfect to their ears. The end result is a very musical pickup that's true to its lineage, but updated for the modern player. Pulling up on the tone knobs attains true single-coil chime, and you have full and independent control of each pickup by way of the 4-knob control layout.

Updated dimensions for effortless playability

Some of the least visible but most powerful features of the PRS McCarty 594 include a neck feel that maximizes your performance and comfort with an asymmetrical Pattern Vintage profile. Though much like their Pattern profile, the Pattern Vintage carve is slightly thicker to fill your hand in just the right way. And the strings will always feel silky smooth when playing and bending due to the guitar's 24.594" scale length, which is also where this model of McCarty gets its name.

Revamped finish for classic feel

Never one to stand pat, PRS has retooled the finish process for their latest models. Taking cues from Private Stock finishes that entail high-gloss nitro over a cellulose CAB basecoat, the result is a finish that's thin, durable, and crystal clear — the perfect formula for vintage feel and superior resonance.

Paul Reed Smith McCarty 594 Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Classic tonewood recipe with beautiful figured maple top over mahogany body
  • Comfortable Pattern Vintage mahogany neck topped with rosewood
  • Longer 24.594" scale length offers a unique feel
  • TCI-tuned 58/15 LT pickups deliver big, full humbucking or single-coil tones
  • 4-knob layout allows individual control of each pickup's volume and tone
  • Comfortable asymmetric Pattern Vintage neck carve
  • High-gloss nitro over a cellulose CAB basecoat fora finish that's thin, durable, and feels great
  • PRS vintage-style non-locking tuners

Almost Perfect

I purchased this guitar in July 2022. An exceptional instrument in terms of design, craftsmanship, quality, playability (more about that follows) and tone. Every attention to detail. I love it! The only two reasons for not giving it a full 5 are due to personal preference. 1) Paul likes his action high so, that's how they come set up from the factory. I was aware of this due to some comments made by Tim Pierce about it in a couple of his videos - he even jokes about it with Paul in a video they did together for Sweetwater. Therefore, I was prepared to pay a little extra to have some set-up work done after receiving it. That done, it's almost perfect... which leads me to... 2) The neck is lacquered. Yes, it's beautifully done with a gloss nitro finish. However, this gets a little sticky sometimes under certain conditions. I have another PRS (Special 22 semi-hollow, wood library edition) that has a non-lacquered neck. I've never seen another PRS with that option, but it's wonderfully smooth and never sticky. I wish PRS had done the same with my 594, which is also a wood library edition. A minor issue and everything else about the instrument is incredible. It will serve me well for years to come. That fact of mine being a wood library edition may affect the relevance of my review to a certain degree as my guitar differs from the one pictured in that the body is swamp ash, the neck is tiger maple and the fret board is ebony. Hardware, pickups and electronics are the same. Thanks to my sales engineer, Mark Bruhn, who is always top notch!

Amazing

I"ve played a number of amazing instruments in my 50+ years of attempting to be a decent player. And over the years I have found and purchased some very nice guitars, but in my quest for well-crafted wood, I have finally met the instrument I have been looking for. Nothing short of a work of art with playability that is truly off the charts. Out of the box, the best sounding guitar I own.
Music background: Years of joy vibrating steel and wood.

Phenomenal

I've had this guitar for over a year now and I LOVE it. The only problem is that it makes my other electric guitars feel like cheap toys. The asymmetrical neck profile is extremely comfortable. The pickups absolutely sing. The coil taps essentially make it four guitars in one. It's the nicest guitar I've ever played and I can't recommend it enough. Just buy it.
Music background: Classical, blues, rock, metal

PRS McCarty 594

This is the only guitar I need. Warm, responsive, clear, and articulate pickups through my Bogner Shiva, Two Rock Classic Reverb, and Hiwatt DR103 through a couple Marshall 4x12 cabinets using Celestion Creamback Speakers.

One Guitar to Rule Them All

This is simply the best guitar I have ever touched. I have several high end Gibson"s and Fenders and a couple other PRSs, but they don"t compare to this guitar. I"ll give some specifics.

1. Fit, finish, and overall quality is as close to perfection as I have ever seen. The maple top is dramatically striking. There is not an unplanned gap or finish run or rough fret on the guitar. Try finding a Gibson or Fender that meets that standard. They don"t exist.

2. 58/15 LT pickups are rich, clear, and articulate in bot full Humbucker and tapped single coil modes. The guitar doesn"t make a bad sound.

3. Playability is exceptional. The neck shape feels different, but embraceable. The frets and fret board are smooth and fast. The controls fall easily to hand while playing, like they are just where they should be.

4. Hardware is top notch. The timers are solid and smooth. The bridge has the most massive saddles I"ve ever seen. The result is a guitar that sustains longer than I do, while the body resonates in a pleasant, very musical way.

In short, I want to play this guitar more than any other guitar I"ve ever owned. I think that"s the ultimate test and compliment a guitar can have.
