If You're Building Your First Mic Locker, Start Here!

Home recordists building their first mic locker will find entry-level ecstasy in the MXL 990/991 recording microphone package. This value-packed bundle includes the venerable 990 large-diaphragm condenser — MXL's take on a tried-and-true, German-style microphone. Ideal for vocal recordings, the 990 delivers a neutral, balanced sound with a flattering sizzle that's sure to please. This package also includes the 991, a small-diaphragm condenser that's tailor-made for recording in tight bedroom studios. Position the 991 in front of your acoustic guitar or above a drum kit, and you'll experience a sound that far surpasses the microphone's modest price tag. The MXL 990/991 package comes with a high-impact carrying case and mic stand adapters.

990 Large-diaphragm Condenser

Home recordists searching for a high-quality — yet eminently budget-friendly — condenser microphone will find exactly what they are looking for in the MXL 990. Centered around a gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm, this mic employs all discrete components, which include a battle-tested, German-style transformerless circuit with a FET preamp and bipolar transistors. The 990 makes an excellent cardioid vocal mic, imparting a neutral and balanced sound with enough bottom end for radio-ready voice-overs and enough sizzle to make your tracks pop. It also lends a nice silky sheen to acoustic instruments. The 990 vaunts a durable housing with vintage styling and an attention-grabbing champagne finish.

Features:

  • High-quality — yet eminently budget-friendly — FET condenser microphone
  • Houses MXL's version of a tried-and-true, German-style transformerless circuit
  • Gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm with a fixed cardioid polar pattern
  • Delivers a predominantly flat response from 30Hz–20kHz
  • Gentle 8kHz presence peak ensures articulate, intelligible vocals without harshness
  • Great for vocals, voice-overs, and acoustic instruments

991 Small-diaphragm Condenser

If you're recording acoustic instruments on a budget, you'll be hard pressed to surpass the quality of the MXL 991. This pencil condenser includes a gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm and a wide cardioid polar pattern. The 991 is tailor-made for close-quarter applications, thanks to its compact profile, and its 30Hz–18kHz frequency range captures everything you plant in front of it with an impressive level of detail. Here at Sweetwater, we're impressed by the 991's top-end smoothness. While this small-diaphragm microphone injects your tracks with enough high-frequency presence to make them stand out, it does so without becoming strident. Recording drums? A stereo pair of 991s makes excellent low-cost overheads.

Features:

  • High-quality, value-laden small-diaphragm pencil condenser
  • Gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm with a wide cardioid polar pattern
  • Compact profile is tailor-made for close-quarter applications
  • 30Hz–18kHz frequency range captures sources with an impressive level of detail
  • Smooth high-frequency response adds presence without becoming strident
  • Great for acoustic instruments and drum overheads

Do it.

If you're considering these mics, they're for you. Unless you'll be recording in a space with sound treatment, etc., spending more money on mics doesn't make any sense. And, if you know what you're doing, you call pull solid results from these, for sure. In fact, get two sets, an SM-57 and something for a kick, and you can record ANY instrument for not too much cash. Enjoy.

Great Mics

I have owned these microphones for nearly 15 years. Have used them on live shows and multiple studio recordings.

Excellent condenser mic especially for the price!

Great first condenser microphones

The ad says entry, and they are entry level, but they have a wider frequency response than an SM-58. Don't compare these to Neumanns, for instance, but for the budding home recording engineer, these mics are pretty pretty cool, and you can buy a lot of them for the price of one mid priced studio condenser mic. I've used them for vocals, guitars, and as I've put two 990's as overheads on a drum kit. At this price level, you really can't go wrong, and if something happens to one of them, its not a major tragedy.
Music background: UG minor in music, former analog engineer and I'm playing fairly regular gigs.

The crescent wrench of condenser mics, my second 990 in 15 years

You want a solid, middle-of-the-road, no frills condenser mic package that can deliver great recordings? The 990 / 991 package is a good investment (and wired with Mogami no less.) But BE AWARE... IMO, these are NOT forgiving microphones, they pick up everything. A good engineer in a studio environment would have no trouble getting incredible results from these mics. For the rest of us, they can be a little hard to handle. Most of the time, they work just fine; if you pay attention to what you're doing. But if you have an exacting situation (which most people buying a 990/991 package will not have) then these mics may not work so well. To capture the best possible tone in the first place, you'll want to play around quite a bit with mic placement. Next, you'll want your own simple "go-to" procedure for "correcting" these mics in your DAW. With a bit of work, you can get the results you want from these mics. Just remember: without proper room acoustics for recording (or top notch mic isolation) you're fighting an uphill battle with highly sensitive condenser mics in the first place, and these mics especially. The better your recording environment, microphone technique and DAW skills, the better results you will probably get with these mics. $ for a PAIR of XLR condensers is a good deal, and having one small and one large diaphragm mic gives you more options. But if you don't need 2 mics, there are (arguably) better large-diaphragm condensers for the price. Catch this one on sale and learn to work with them, and you'll definitely come out ahead w/ the 990/991 package.
