A Hot-sounding Rock ‘n’ Roll Icon

With its instantly recognizable body shape and top-shelf rock ‘n’ roll sound, the SG has found its place in the pantheon of iconic electric guitars. The Epiphone SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola takes all of the qualities that made the SG a classic and fits them into a high-quality, neatly priced guitar that you’re sure to love. The Epiphone SG Standard '61’s inimitable tone begins with a solid mahogany body and mahogany neck that provide warmth and depth, then it adds an Indian laurel fretboard for clarity and punch. Twin ProBucker humbucking pickups bring the thunder, and a vintage-style Maestro Vibrola tremolo offers expressive bends and warbles with the Epiphone SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola, available from Sweetwater.

Legendary guitar with a distinctive design

It’s hard to believe, but, in 1961, Gibson discontinued the original Les Paul guitar and replaced it with the SG, which originally bore the Les Paul name. But Les himself wasn’t a fan of that, so the guitar was renamed SG, which stood for… solid guitar! A few years later, Gibson started making the original Les Pauls again, but the SG proved so popular they continued producing them. The reason is easy to understand. It has a distinctive look and delivers a classic humbucker sound with all the thick, fat tone you could ever want. Though it’s often thought of as the archetypal rock guitar, the SG has been used across all genres of music; from jazz to fusion, metal, prog, and beyond.

Balanced tone has warmth, depth, and detail

The Epiphone SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola’s all-mahogany body has a rich and warm resonance with incredible depth, which belies the comfortable weight of the SG. From there, the SlimTaper mahogany neck extends the sonic depth of the guitar, and it’s capped with an Indian laurel fretboard that spices up the mix with brilliant highs and vibrant overtones.

Premium hardware and electronics package

Stocked with high-quality electronics and hardware, the Epiphone SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola is built for performance. The ProBuckers on the SG Standard '61 feature Alnico II magnets — the same as those in sought-after vintage PAF humbuckers — for rich, warm tone with crystalline highs and a tight bottom. With a ProBucker-2 in the neck position and a slightly overwound ProBucker-3 in the bridge position, crank your gain, and you can do some serious sonic damage.

Epiphone SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Instantly recognizable, iconic rock ‘n’ roll guitar, neatly priced
  • Warm and resonant all-mahogany body
  • Comfortable and quick mahogany SlimTaper neck
  • Graph Tech nut enhances sustain and tonal balance
  • ProBucker humbuckers deliver classic PAF-style tone
  • Vintage-style Maestro Vibrola tremolo tailpiece for expressive bends and warbles

Excellent guitar

In short, this guitar plays and sounds excellent. Rich, fat tone and sounds great with some overdrive. I'm quite happy with guitar, and I own a lot of nice guitars. Attached is a tune I recorded with this guitar.
Music background: 55+ Years of playing semi-pro.

My Desert Island Ax!

I wrote this originally and regrettably never posted because it's never been something I do. This guitar deserves the respect and it still stands true over a year later! This one guitar made me a lover of SG's and I can't wait to get my hands on another!

This was an Xmas gift from my Lady! And let me tell you, she hit the spot! (No pun intended) it was wrapped up and I was under the impression the kiddos had a big gift from Santa, and when I was curious I felt the weight of the box...( I am use to a Les Paul so it didn't feel like a guitar and there was no case, you could have helped her on that one Sweetwater haha)

When I finally opened it, I haven't put it down. I run it through a Marshall Origin 20H cranked!!! I use the volume. This gets me pure vintage Rock and I absolutely love it. If this is what the real 61' was like, I see why it became such a must have guitar.

The neck is absolutely comfortable. I am normally a fan of the unfinished and satin necks, but this one is still a great feel and makes you feel like your with an old friend. The PUPS and POTS are very dynamic. I've achieved just about everything I can on an SG. To include the infamous "Woman" tone everyone chases.
I have run it through the Blues Breaker circuit, K Circuit, Octavia Fuzz. This axe is the Gibby&Epi Collaboration we've all been dreaming of.

I haven't set it up from traveling all the way to middle Alaska. It's been -30 consistently through mail and was even in the garage and a moving truck for a bit... needless to say she is an absolute beast.

Overall, amazing balance. That old friend feel. Phenomenal tone. I couldn't be happier. I wish I could really afford more of this series. I truly do. Just for the experience. All of this said, yes I have owned a fair share of Gibson guitars to include an SG. After a month of trying to really enjoy it, it had no good feel and I sold it very quickly... this one will never leave the vault!
Music background: Multi instrument musician and independent recording artist.

OMG

Past problems of the contours being different red shade were non existent with my selection. Just under 7 lbs. Fits perfect in my lap over my right thigh.
Kluson Deluxe tuners are best tuners on a new guitar that I've bought. No replacement needed.
I actually like the pickups. They are perfect thru my Helix. Knobs useful with nice, smooth taper. I haven't opened up the guts to peek, but all working great.
I DID pop in a roller bridge as the original was moving a tad with the vibrola. Not anymore with a roller bridge and the vibola is very useful with light to medium use. Don't expect Floyd performance. Achieved great intonation too.
Adjusted to nice low action around 3/64 @ 15th fret with no buzz or trussrod adjustment.
Overall...this guitar is gorgeous and $ cheaper than the Gibson. Only other guitar players will note the brand but I'm past headstock decals and besides, I'll melt the faces off those other players with the licks coming off this SG with total fret access and ease of playing.
I like it so much I want to buy another...but I don't need two of the same guitar at this point. Maybe the P-90 version is next....aftermarket vibrola too!
Yes...pull the trigger.
Music background: Past pro...serious home recordist and praise team player nowadays.
