Yamaha’s Next-gen Flagship P Series Digital Piano

Yamaha’s P Series digital pianos are top sellers at Sweetwater because they deliver a winning combination: uncompromising sound quality, authentic playing feel, and a robust feature set — at an affordable price. Now, Yamaha builds on its success with the P-525 digital piano, which includes advanced features ported from the company’s high-end Clavinova line. The P-525’s updated CFX and Bösendorfer samples faithfully replicate two of the finest grand pianos in the world, while its GrandTouch-S keyboard action with wooden keys and synthetic ebony and ivory keytops will delight even the most discerning pro pianists. Whether you’re a seasoned professional looking for a compact 88-key digital piano or a beginner needing an instrument that will last for years to come, the Yamaha P-525 is a solid investment.

Enhanced live performance functionality

The P-525 brings new features to the P Series that enhance live performance functionality. Registration Memories allow you to store and recall panel settings at the press of a button to easily access your favorite configurations. Meanwhile, Sound Boost instantly adds a prescribed dose of volume and equalization for extra punch, helping you cut through the mix when playing through the internal speakers in small ensemble settings such as an acoustic jazz trio. Despite all the high tech packed into the P-525, Yamaha’s flagship P Series digital piano retains a sleek, roadworthy chassis that looks as great in your home as it does onstage.

The sound and feel of world-class concert grands

You’ll love the Yamaha P-525’s GrandTouch-S graded hammer-action keyboard, which is expertly crafted by Yamaha artisans using cutting-edge multi-sensor triggering. Solid wood keys transfer vibrations from the instrument to give the player critical tactile feedback; synthetic ivory and ebony keytops wick away moisture for a supremely comfortable playing feel. The GrandTouch-S keyboard works in concert with the P-525’s half-damper pedal control for a remarkably realistic acoustic grand piano playing experience. As Yamaha’s Grand Expression Modeling technology replicates the mechanics of a piano’s hammers, strings, and internal components, Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) re-creates the resonance of the piano strings and body as they respond in real time to the innumerable acoustic factors at play within an acoustic grand piano. Through headphones, concert hall performances are reproduced with breathtaking spatial dimensionality, courtesy of Yamaha’s 3D Binaural Sampling.

Advanced technology for vivid and richly varied expression

Yamaha has been building acoustic pianos since 1900, and the company has been on the cutting edge of digital technology for decades. Under the hood of the P-525 are proprietary digital audio technologies such as Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which meticulously models the infinite number of factors that create the sound of a concert grand piano to impart vivid and richly varied expression to your music. From the commanding sound of Yamaha’s own flagship CFX 9-foot concert grand to the awe-inspiring majesty of Austria’s revered 8-octave Bösendorfer Imperial, you’ll thrill to the sonic richness of the world’s finest acoustic pianos, plus a selection of other excellent instrument voices, including electric pianos, organs, vibraphone, and more.

Get more from your digital piano with the Smart Pianist app

Like many of Yamaha’s digital pianos, the P-525 can open up an exciting world of expanded digital features when you connect it to the Smart Pianist app, which offers a gorgeous graphical interface and a plethora of intriguing features. In addition to giving you full control over the P-525’s main functions, the Smart Pianist app lets you access educational tools like piano lessons, practice exercises, and music scores. You can play along with your favorite tunes accompanied by generated chord progressions. The app can analyze the songs in your smart device’s music library using Audio to Score chord tracker technology to produce a piano score, making it easy for you to learn how to play your favorite songs. These are but a few examples of the advanced features that enable the P-525 and Smart Pianist app to bring you a world of musical enrichment.

As close as I can get to an acoustic piano for $

I am very happy with this as a practice instrument. The action really does feel close to an acoustic especially with the "hard 2" key sensitivity setting. With DT900 pro headphones the sound is excellent and removed all the muddy headphone sound I heard previously with my cheaper Sony headphones. I really can't say enough about the key action and the keyboard feel. It's right in between my Yamaha U3 and my teachers Yamaha grand. The dynamic range is amazing and very responsive. The speakers aren't great, but I wouldn't expect that from a portable keyboard especially at this price range. I look forward to finding some time to run some VSTs and external monitors at some point. For now, with the DT900 headphones I finally have a piano I can realistically practice on when my kids are on our acoustic or when it's late at night.

First time ordering from Sweetwater and the processing, shipping and customer service was outstanding. Would recommend Sweetwater and this instrument for anyone in my situation. Needing a realistic feeling practice instrument, that can also be transported to a Gig and doesn't cost in excess of 4k.

Great portable, suitable for stage

I had several reasons to choose a portable digital piano. I was looking for superior tone and action which, until a few years ago, didn't really exist in a portable that didn't require separate amplification. I tried the Kawai ES920 and the Yamaha P-515 last summer and concluded that the Yamaha, while stiff feeling, felt more realistic than the Kawai. When I learned that Yamaha released a new P-Series flagship, the P-525 which featured a newer advanced keybed, I decided to roll the dice and purchase it sight unseen.

I have been very pleased with my purchase. The keyboard action isn't as stiff as the P-515, and the piano's ability to read .mid files via USB, while not new to the P-525, is a great feature. The speakers are powerful enough to fill a small room. I used it on stage with a JC120 in a small hall and it cut through nicely. I do prefer the Stage Grand over the featured CFX Grand when playing with other musicians.

I only give my purchase experience with Sweetwater a 4.5 out of 5 because one side of my package, delivered via FedEx Ground, had a forklift blade hole on one side that penetrated the many layers of heavy cardboard that the keyboard came packaged in. Fortunately upon close inspection, no scratches or other evidence of damage were apparent.

All am am doing is constantly trying to make it sound better.

I have the P515 in the stand with the full pedal set in my living room; So, I wanted to invest in a second piano for gigging.
I bought the P525 and I find myself constantly trying to dial it in,
There is an overall muddy harshness and a bell ring type of bite especially on certain notes in the second octave that are hard to dial out to the point where I have to dampen the entire piano sound too much. In the last month I have played through a Motion Sound keyboard amp, the main PA and Internal Speakers in different locations, it is very difficult to make it sound pleasant. The damper pedal can really load it up quickly if not careful.
The P515 Sounds better and I am debating whether to keep the P525 or trade it in for another P515. I haven't given up yet.

Sound and Headphone audio not great

I used to have a p255 that sounded alot more clear than this. The sound is good but it's not that good to where I feel the wow factor. Had issues with the headphone port where the headphones would not be loud when plugged in at max volume. Yamaha's rec n' share app was terrible and unusable when plugging in the usb-c to it. Produced static sounds that made all recordings unusable. Overall, product was underwhelming for the price.

Overly bright, unnatural sounding pianos

I really wanted to like this one. I honestly don't know what Yamaha is doing these days. I thought this would be perfect for a home piano— a good keybed, and good basic piano sounds were all I was after. The pianos sounds are terrible though. I don't even know how to describe it, but the EQ seems very off and the sounds are too bright. Almost sounds like a digital ROMpler from the 90s. Totally unnatural and rather shrill. I spent a good while playing around with the settings, but couldn't find anything that sounded right. Turning down brightness, adjusting reverb and resonance etc only made it sound dull and muddy in the midrange. My old P-115 sounds better than this, which is pretty sad:/ The keys play nice overall, but are quite noisy.

So, this is going back. After disappointing experiences with this and the CP-88, I don't think I'll buy another Yamaha. Shame, because their keybeds are nicer than most (especially the CP-88). But that doesn't mean much if it sounds aren't usable.
