Slimmer Is Better!

If you write music, then CME's Xkey controller belongs in your mobile rig. Surrounded by a sleekly designed molded aluminum chassis, this controller is constructed similarly to a chiclet computer keyboard. The Xkey owes its extremely low profile to a key mechanism that happens to depress evenly no matter where you press on them. The end result is a freakishly slim keyboard that's only 3.6mm thick (approximately the thickness of 36 sheets of printer paper) and remarkably playable. Did we mention the keys are full sized and velocity sensitive, or that they feature polyphonic aftertouch? That's right, the CME Xkey is one serious little controller keyboard.

Redefining "low-profile" keyboard controller

We simply cannot say it clearly enough, this is one extremely slim USB keyboard controller! At an astonishing .14" thick CME's Xkey tops out the list of full-featured 25-key controllers. You could almost lose this thing in your backpack or laptop case, and if you have an iPad in a midsize carry case, the Xkey could comfortably snuggle up next to it. The only physical thing that's substantial about the the Xkey is its weight, 1.32 pounds, which is just enough to stay well rooted as you play.

More than playable — fun to play!

Despite its unusual appearance, the CME Xkey is certainly no toy loaded with mini keys whose never-quite-right key spacing will cause your fingers to fumble. We're talking about full-sized keys set into a precision-cut aluminum chassis to provide you with comfortable key separation. That includes slightly elevated black keys you can play naturally.

The Xkey's brilliant chiclet key mechanism, which causes each key to depress evenly no matter where your finger pushes down, adds to the playability, and if you've ever enjoyed the fast response of traditional synth action, you'll positively delight in the speed of these keys. Now top it all off with 128-levels of velocity sensitivity, polyphonic aftertouch, and unique touch-sensitive pitch and modulation controls, and there's nothing average about the Xkey at all.

Cross compatible and made to travel

What do you use to write music? A Macbook? A PC laptop? Perhaps an iPad or other tablet? It doesn't matter to the CME Xkey, whose class-compliant USB connection provides standard MIDI over USB to any music-making application you want to run. The Xkey is also 100% USB bus powered, allowing you to travel light and never worry about carting around a power supply or spare batteries.

CME Xkey Ultra-slim USB Controller Keyboard Features:

  • An ultra-slim and full-featured MIDI controller keyboard you can take anywhere
  • Precision cut aluminum frame provides natural key separation for 25 full-sized keys
  • Key design depresses evenly for added playability

perfect fit

It's been a game-changer to have a perfectly-sized controller for all of my air travel. The Xkey fits easily (and lightly) into my backpack, and it's easy to use right from my seat on the plane. The touch sensitivity is surprisingly good for a controller this light -- it's perfect!

Personal touch

Sweetwater approaches the work of supplying gearheads of the modern world in an old fashioned way. Personal attention, followup, and customer approval. I get an email message from the company and I think - "computer generated." I answer, just for klcks, and there is a real person. Then we talk on the phone and he wants to know about what kind of work I'll be doing with the gear. Then, later, there is a thing I don't quite understand, and I call him. He pulls up some manuals and walks me through the set up, and I'm good to go. I've been around a long time. I remember when businesses did business on a one-to-one basis. That went away. Then it reappeared with Sweetwater. Folks, as you evolve, don't leave behind the thing that makes you special: a person inside your company, with a name, and a memory and a friendly helpful voice.

Fabulous for its size!

Disclaimer: I'm not a pro keyboardist, and have only every amateurely (though enthusiastically, with good rhythm & grace, lol) plunked around on pianos. That said, as a songwriter/composer, I needed to step up my midi game and get an actual keyboard for recording even simple parts.

While this doesn't play like a piano or weighted-key keyboard, it's very smooth and effective for my needs. The chicklet keys actually have a lovely velocity response that was quick for me to get accustomed to.

The only thing I would improve is to add at least a slider pad for the pitch bend mods in the absence of a real wheel or bar – the buttons are perfectly useable, but a little bit simplistic if you really want to go nuts with your bends. That said, I will confess I haven't actually used them much, so maybe they just take a little getting used to.

For the size (and stealth and elegance), this thing is really excellent. I bought it because my studio is mobile and small, but have been more than pleasantly surprised by its overall playability.

Exactly what I wanted for a reasonable price

I needed a small keyboard to speed music entry into Finale. This keyboard does the trick!
One of my biggest issues is that my fingertips are very broad, and smaller keys don't do the trick. The keys on the Xway are the size of a piano, so I can easily get my fat fingers on the right key.
My only complaint is that the USB cord hooks up on the right side of the unit, so for me to place it to the right side, the cord has to travel around the back or underneath.

Second unit, same problem

I bought this CME MIDI keyboard and it had an issue with sticky keys and no velocity on the upper octave. I called my rep and they quickly replaced it with a new one. The second unit has worked pretty good but a month in it started showing similar sporadic issues. Last week in a session, the upper octave stopped working and when it came back, it's significantly lower in volume than the lower octave keys. It also have no velocity range, it's always fixed. This unit was attractive because of it's slim design for travel but it's not reliable at all. Bummer.
