Plasma-powered Distortion from Gamechanger Audio and Third Man Records

Gamechanger Audio harnessed the awesome power of plasma to create the Plasma Pedal, an ultra-gnarly dirt box that became an instant pedalboard classic. Now, they’ve teamed up with Jack White and Third Man Records for an amped-up iteration — the Plasma Coil high-voltage distortion pedal. Like the Plasma Pedal, the Plasma Coil converts audio signals into a 3,500-volt electrical charge, blasting it through a xenon-filled vacuum tube and spewing out chaotic, speaker-melting mutant distortion. And it heaps on five additional octave modes, including two sub-octave modes, one upper-octave mode, and two mixed-octave modes, to create the kind of harmonically dense fuzz and distortion sounds that are a staple of Jack White’s tone arsenal. Guitarists at Sweetwater are all about the Plasma Pedal, and the Plasma Coil takes it to new territories — we’ve made space on our pedalboards for both! Like the yellow, flickering bolt of electricity illuminating its front panel, the Plasma Coil is a mesmerizing high-voltage tone monster!

Devastating distortion and octave fuzz effects

Gamechanger Audio’s Plasma Coil follows the basic blueprint of its predecessor, converting your audio signal into a series of continuous high-voltage discharges within a xenon-filled vacuum tube, rather than relying on clipping diodes, driven tubes, or transistors. The result is a brutal, gritty distortion that is highly responsive to dynamics. With its glowing yellow beam of electricity, the Plasma Coil gives you real-time visual feedback of the interplay between your guitar signal and the pedal, as they merge into brain-bending overdrive and otherworldly octave fuzz effects.

Six octave modes inspired by Jack White and Third Man Records

When Jack White was helming the White Stripes, he had to cover a lot of sonic territory, simultaneously inhabiting the roles of rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist, and bass player. To achieve his stacked signature sound, Jack often relied on octave-based distortion and fuzz effects. The Plasma Coil adheres to that formula, serving up five octave circuits on top of its default high-voltage setting, which produce everything from synthy sub-octave growls to bitcrushed sputters and searing, high-octave sustain. An additional effect footswitch pushes the Plasma Coil’s tonal destruction even further, adding more gain and more attitude, and it’s switchable between momentary or latch modes to hold the effect or fire it off in bursts.

Gamechanger Audio — Modern effects pioneers

The way we hear it, the folks at Gamechanger were sipping beverages outdoors on their porch one summer evening and watching bugs being picked off by their bug zapper. And the concept behind the Plasma series took off like a lightning bolt.

Many effects producers can claim to be "game changers." But with their Plasma and Plasma Coil units, Gamechanger Audio of Latvia has really earned the title. These uncharted effects units and modules allow musicians from all realms — guitar to bass to synth — to interact with their music in new and exciting ways. Lots of pedals claim to be unique; this one is.

Lots of variation of tones possible; and the textures this thing generates and how it interacts with playing makes it something really special. Easy to spend hours with this one in play.

Fuzzy Wassy Was A Bear

I'm not really a fuzz guy and admittedly I don't use this panel for my typical stuff, however this pedal is fun and bizzar are inspire to think outside of the box a little bit. The build quality is ver good. The sound is by far the most gnarly fuzz I have tried. If you're new to fuzz and have never used one, my suggestion would to buy a BehringervFuzz ( cuz they are so inexpensive) if you like fuzz, after that just save up and buy this. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Didn't want to like it

On a recent trip to Sweetwater, I came across this pedal. Based on the price tag, I really wanted not to like it, but I plugged it in anyway. For the next 20 or so minutes I was treated to idea after idea. I tried to get away from it by playing other pedals but found myself continually referring back to this one, "it's cool, but it's not Plasma Coil cool". Went to lunch, came back, and played the pedal again, same experience, more ideas. The design is beautiful, the plasma coil itself is otherworldly, but the sound of this pedal is what sold me. I've never heard anything like it.

I read a review that said you'll likely have an album's worth of ideas in the first 10 minutes of playing this pedal. Absolutely true.

Doesn't get better than this.

If it's good enough for Mike Kerr and Jack White, it's good enough for me. I have not played on a more fun fuzz pedal! Suits all my needs - endless sustain, yet perfectly gated. Definitely my favorite fuzz!

Monster tones in a little box - perfect for bass

The tone this thing makes is sick. Its like a gated fuzz (im assuming you already know that though), theres a lot more possibilities than one would think at first glance with the "octave settings" that can be toggled on and off and the voltage knob. Perfect for bluesy / alt rock tones

I use it on my bass and although its a little hard to control on bass, its exactly what I wanted out of a distortion pedal!
