A Premium Taylor with an Imaginative Design

The Taylor 816ce Builder’s Edition acoustic-electric guitar pairs a distinctive body design with an immaculate sound for the ultimate playing experience. Built around Taylor’s innovative V-Class bracing, this Grand Symphony-sized guitar produces a rich and airy orchestral tone with incredible detail, resonance, and projection, supported by an Indian rosewood back and sides and a crisp Lutz spruce top. The 816ce Builder’s Edition’s eye-catching look derives from its chamfered body and fretboard edges, satin finish, and scooped, treble-side soundport cutaway, which gives access to the upper frets without diminishing tone. Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics provide a clear and accurate amplified sound along with feedback control for an ideal gigging instrument. Guitarists at Sweetwater were more than impressed when they picked up the 816ce Builder’s Edition — a premium acoustic made to be treasured.

Taylor Builder’s Edition Collection

Taylor’s premium Builder’s Edition family of acoustic guitars is the brainchild of Taylor master guitar designer Andy Powers. Builder’s Edition guitars were created to highlight Taylor’s V-Class bracing system and to demonstrate Taylor’s most cutting-edge innovations. With a level of craftsmanship typically not offered on standard models, Builder’s Edition guitars provide players with an exemplary instrument that promises to inspire. According to Powers, “The Builder’s Edition concept is meant to be an expression of Taylor’s instrument-building imagination.” And what an incredible imagination it is!

V-class bracing: a sonic revelation

Bracing is the internal framework of an acoustic guitar that helps shape its sound. Although X-bracing has been standard in acoustic guitars for over a century, it creates an innate conflict between two key elements of a guitar’s sound: volume and sustain. The guitar’s top (its soundboard) contributes to both. The flexibility of the top generates volume (projection), while its stiffness generates sustain. And with X-braced guitar tops, here’s where the trade-off comes in: when something is made stiffer, its flexibility is reduced (and vice versa).

V-class bracing changes all that. With Taylor’s V-class bracing, an acoustic guitar top can be both stiff and flexible — for more volume and sustain. V-class bracing provides stiffness parallel to the strings for more rigidity and, hence, sustain. Flexibility on either side generates the air movement necessary for robust projection. It’s the best of both worlds. This groundbreaking innovation also improves intonation — not only producing notes that are louder and with longer sustain, but are also more in tune with each other. Guitarists at Sweetwater are gobsmacked. But don’t take our word for it — pick up the superb Taylor 814ce Builder’s Edition and experience it for yourself!

A classic tonewood combination

Nothing beats the sound of rosewood topped with spruce. As a top tonewood, Lutz spruce offers a combination of strength and elasticity that delivers a broad dynamic range with crisp articulation that’s ideal for a wide range of playing styles, from delicate fingerpicking to aggressive flatpicked strumming. Used for the back and sides of the 814ce, Indian rosewood’s extended frequency range and rich, musical tonality have elevated it to premium status among tonewoods. Its potent low end can serve up a throaty growl, while sparkling treble notes ring out with bell-like clarity. Slightly scooped in the midrange (as compared with mahogany), rosewood acoustic guitars are perfect for solo performance, vocal accompaniment, and tracking in sparser arrangements.

Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics

If you play plugged in, then you’re going to love the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics built into your 816ce Builder's Edition. The key to this fantastic system is the three-section proprietary pickup located behind the saddle. Because of where it’s positioned and how it’s integrated into the 816ce Builder Edition’s saddle, the ES2 pickup provides you with remarkably clear and accurate sound. In addition to a master volume control, a pair of tone controls lets you tweak your highs and lows to get the sound you need, and a discreet phase switch offers vital onboard feedback suppression.

  • Soundport cutaway

One of the smoothest and best sounding Taylors I've ever played.

I bought this guitar, the Taylor 816ce Builders Edition, after selling my 717e Grand Pacific, which just didn't have the bass, volume, or balance I was looking for.
So, when the 816ce became available, I took a chance on it, and I will never look back or have need for another guitar. This 816ce, with it's shorter scale length and light gauge strings, is a dream to play. It has lots of volume but sounds amazing even when lightly strummed.
I don't know if it's the new sound port cut-away, or just a perfect combination of everything in the Builder's Edition, but every note rings out clear, including a strong bass, while maintaining a beautiful blend together. It's hard to explain...it just works. And personally I think it's one of the best looking Taylors available.
I'm principally a strummer, and this guitar is perfect. As usual in my experience, Sweetwater and their sales engineers are the best to deal with, even amidst the Corona Virus panic. Highly recommended!

Fantastic

I own this builders model. I live in Nashville and this compliments my Gruhn Martin 0000 which costs the same new. Wihtout a doubt the extra soundhole is a gamechanger in the industry. I can see this as the future of tone.

I'm getting used to it.

The Pros -
The 816ce Builders Edition is a beautiful guitar. It is easier to play than my 414ce, which really surprised me. I have an unusual picking style, which is very aggressive. I never realized how much I had to fight the guitar to get all that goes on in my picking style to be heard until I played the 816ce. I don't have to fight it at all. Everything comes through without any effort. Maybe it's the wear on the frets that makes the 414ce not as easy to play. Don't get me wrong the 414ce is a great guitar and very easy to play. It's my go to daily driver even over my Martin D28. It's just that the 816ce compared to the 414ce is so easy to play, it's effortless. Maybe it's the extra sound hole that enables me to put less effort in to picking. Lifting off the strings with my left hand to create a hammering effect takes much less effort.

The Cons -
There is a bit of fret buzz on the lower strings when I pick or strum hard. A set of medium weight strings might take car of that. The new electronics are not good. I'm going to see if I can get the older electronics used on my older 414ce installed on the 816ce. The new system makes all the unwanted sounds stand out like string scratching from sliding chords. It's so bad that I consider the electric part of the acoustic-electric to be unusable. That is a huge issue which Taylor is going to have to rectify. I'm going to talk to my sales rep and see about either fixing or replacing the electronics or maybe even returning the guitar. No I can't return it cuz it is too good. There has to be a way to fix or replace the electronics. I can't believe that Taylor went with the new system over the old, which was very good.

The Guitar I Never Knew I Needed

When Taylor Introduced V-Class Bracing in 2018, I was highly intrigued. Then in March of 2020 they introduced THIS. I have always been content with low-budget guitars (not that I really had a choice) but in January of 2022 I found myself with an unexpected guitar budget...

I bought the 816ce Builders Edition and I will never look back. The playability, the tone, the presence of this beauty are everything I have ever wanted in an acoustic. I love how the notes bloom over time and how the guitar seems to breath. It's very dynamic and excels with fingerpicking and strumming, basically anything you can throw at it. The Grand Symphony body size/shape has it all; clear brightness, well-defined mids and plenty of warmth. In a word, balance. And that was as a new guitar!: as it has opened up (I play it every chance I get) I have continuously been amazed at the tone, over and over again. And of course, being a Taylor, it plays like butter. Action is spot-on and the neck feels fabulous.

The fit and finish are impeccable. With the silent satin finish and the build quality, it could almost be mistaken for a moulded formica guitar... Strange compliment, I know.

For some, the sound port looks too weird or they say they can't hear that it makes any difference to the tone. I beg to differ. Some say the player can feel/hear it and some say only the listener can hear it. I definitely hear the difference as the player. What isn't always mentioned is RECORDING. This records beautifully and mic-ing the sound port presents a gorgeous and easy option for a really clear, balanced tone.

The playing experience is so good, I'm not going to ding it for the ES2 system (which I'm not impressed with). I have addressed the ES2's tonal shortcomings through the use of IR's and an inexpensive IR loader when playing live.

The Taylor 816ce Builders Edition is the guitar I never knew I needed.

Excellent Guitar: Builder’s Edition has that extra

Well balanced, love the shorter scale for easier playability. Enjoy the power of the Lutz top and the added projection of the sound hole port. This guitar checks all my boxes. I wish they would've made the western floral pattern case for this guitar like the 717e builder's edition.
