Taylor’s Sumptuous 814ce

Combining elegant aesthetics with sophisticated playability and tone-enhancing details, the 800 Series is Taylor’s incredibly popular class of premium rosewood guitars. The 814ce acoustic-electric plays very comfortably, thanks to its Grand Auditorium body, graceful Venetian cutaway, and ergonomically radiused rosewood armrest. Featuring beautiful premium solid tonewoods — a Sitka spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, a tropical mahogany neck, and a West African ebony fingerboard — the 814ce is the perfect studio and stage workhorse: brilliant in solo and sparse musical settings, and holding its own when tracked in thick arrangements. You’ll love the clear, balanced tone — a sound forged by Taylor’s revolutionary V-Class bracing and amplified flawlessly by the onboard Expression System 2 electronics. As your eyes drink in this instrument’s understated elegance, your hands savor its flawless playability, and your ears revel in its rich, organic tone, you’ll treasure your Taylor 814ce. It’s a feast for the senses.

V-Class bracing: a sonic revelation

Bracing is the internal framework of an acoustic guitar that helps shape its sound. Although X-bracing has been standard in acoustic guitars for over a century, it creates an innate conflict between two key elements of a guitar’s sound: volume and sustain. The guitar’s top (its soundboard) contributes to both. The flexibility of the top generates volume (projection), while its stiffness generates sustain. And with X-braced guitar tops, here’s where the trade-off comes in: when something is made stiffer, its flexibility is reduced (and vice versa). V-Class bracing changes all that.

With Taylor’s V-Class bracing, an acoustic guitar top can be both stiff and flexible — for more volume and sustain. V-Class bracing provides stiffness parallel to the strings for more rigidity and hence sustain. Flexibility on either side generates the air movement necessary for robust projection. It’s the best of both worlds. This groundbreaking innovation also improves intonation; not only producing notes that are louder and with longer sustain — but more in tune with each other. V-Class bracing boosts volume evenly across the tonal spectrum, increases sustain, and improves the natural intonation of the instrument by creating a more synergistic response from the soundboard. This fosters a more harmonious relationship between the notes you play, helping chords to ring out in cohesive splendor. Pick up a Taylor with V-Class bracing and experience what guitarists at Sweetwater have already discovered.

Grand Auditorium body style delivers exceptional presence

Taylor’s beloved Grand Auditorium body style, featured on the 814ce, employs the width and depth of a dreadnought, so it delivers prodigious volume that makes it a “tone cannon” in its own right. However, its waist is narrower, which gives Grand Auditorium bodied acoustic guitars more treble zing, along with improved playing comfort and a sleeker look. The 814ce’s Grand Auditorium body style also helps to sharpen the definition of each note you play, balancing out nicely with the excellent projection of its V-Class-braced Sitka spruce top.

A classic tonewood combination

Nothing beats the sound of rosewood topped with spruce. As a top tonewood, Sitka spruce offers a combination of strength and elasticity that delivers a broad dynamic range with crisp articulation that’s ideal for a wide range of playing styles, from delicate fingerpicking to aggressive flatpicked strumming. Used for the back and sides of the 814ce, Indian rosewood’s extended frequency range and rich, musical tonality have elevated it to premium status among tonewoods. Its potent low end can serve up a throaty growl, while sparkling treble notes ring out with bell-like clarity. Slighted scooped in the midrange (as compared with mahogany), rosewood acoustic guitars are perfect for solo performance, vocal accompaniment, and tracking in sparser arrangements.

Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics

If you play plugged in, you’re going to love the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES-2) electronics built into your 814ce. The key to this fantastic system is the 3-section proprietary pickup located behind the saddle. Because of where it’s positioned and how it’s integrated into the guitar’s saddle, the ES-2 pickup provides you with remarkably clear and accurate sound. In addition to a master volume control, a pair of tone controls let you tweak your highs and lows to get the sound you need, and a discreet polarity switch offers vital onboard feedback suppression.

I love my new Taylor 814ce

I recently bought a Taylor 814ce from Sweetwater. The Sweetwater high resolution photos of their guitars make it possible to look closely at the grain on the top. The grain of the guitar I purchased had very straight grain and had silk (medullary rays)/cross grain throughout the upper and lower bout. The top in my guitar provides a sparkling response, with clear highs, warm lows and a slightly scooped midrange. The V-Class bracing inside the guitar projects loud volume (when you dig into it) and longer sustain then the old cross bracing designs. I've actually counted out 16 beats of volume from the strings while the sound decays to an inaudible level and this is on a brand-new guitar.

I play fingerstyle blues, ragtime music and I'm working on flat picking blue grass tunes. The neck is comfortable and quick to move around on. I love the comfort of the Arm Rest that allows for long fun practice sessions. I also like the maple binding on the edge of the back and sides, it is so pretty. The guitar comes with Taylor's ES-2 preamp and pickup which is handy when you need to plug into an amp. The hard-shell case fits the guitar snugly, so your new pride and joy doesn't move around inside the case.

I wanted a guitar with a Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides. This wood type matches my Martin M38 that I purchased in 1993. After 29 years of playing the M38 it has all of attributes of seasoned Martin guitar. Bright highs, a punchy base tone and good sustain. My brand new 814ce has the same attributes but with a longer sustain.

The Grand Auditorium size is perfect for me and is comparable to my M38. I had Sweetwater ship my new 814ce guitar to the local Walgreens to avoid potential theft by porch pirates. When I picked up the guitar it was double boxed, with 814ce in the hard-shell case. The hard shell case was in the original Taylor shipping box and lastly the Taylor box was in the Sweetwater box. Needless to say, the guitar arrived in perfect condition. There was not a fingerprint, ding or scratch anywhere to be found.

I recommend Sweetwater to anyone interested in purchasing a new guitar. Your Sales Engineer can answer all your questions. Kris Eckman, my sales engineer has always been great to work for all my purchases and questions. I also recommend you consider purchasing a new Taylor Guitar. There are a variety of models, prices, and wood types to choose from. Taylor provides a lifetime guarantee with each of their guitars. My new Taylor 814ce is a wonderful instrument. It has beautiful fit and finish, great tone, perfect playability and set up. After the first month of ownership my 814ce has a great start of becoming a lifetime guitar for me, I love it.

Classic tone

This guitar does it all and more. Purchased a Martin previously and returned it. Was more of a strumming guitar. Having owned a 714 previously, I had high expectations. Awesome for finger picking , lead or strumming. Matched with my 2 mesa s and super pedal board , nothing comes close. Buy this guitar. 10. Yup.

I absolutely LOVE this guitar!

I was looking for a new acoustic guitar to replace a Martin I mistakenly sold a few years back. The new Martin's I tried just didn't cut it and so I focused on Taylor Guitars. I tried the 314ce and 414ce and although there were very nice they were not what I was looking for. I did some research and focused on the 814ce but was not able to find a place locally who stocked it so I bought it from Sweetwater. When I received it the quality was immediately apparent - it is a thing of beauty! Since I got it I have barely been able to put it down! The bottom end it very full and deep, the highs are silky smooth, and the dynamic range is awesome. And, my playing has gotten markedly better after playing it for less than a week!
This is my third Taylor (T5 C2 Custom Koa & 354ce 12-string) and the 814ce has totally exceeded my expectations. It is the last acoustic guitar I will ever need to buy and I will have it for the rest of my life! Matt and Sweetwater have been great through the entire process - thanks, I couldn't be happier.

I couldn't be happier

This is the best guitar I have ever owned. Most people wouldn't trust the idea of spending thousands of dollars on a guitar they have never held and played. I would agree with them if my experience with Ryan and the Sweetwater process wasn't a world class experience. I couldn't be more trusting of Sweetwater's ethical business model and customer service.

Taylor 814 Ce

Recently purchased my 814CE. As usual phenomenal service and fast shipping from sweetwater and my rep Mike Blair.

The construction on this guitar is amazing and the finish is hard as a rock. Doesn't scratch easily like the nitro finishes on others.

The sound is great for the shape, and it stays in tune. Will say there's some minor fret buzz, but other than that I love it!
