The Legendary SG Special

Gibson’s SG Special brings back a classic. Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and smashed onstage by Townshend, the Gibson SG Special is a rock icon. Gibson’s Nashville-made SG Special takes you back to the formative years of the legendary solidbody electric guitar: small pickguard, P-90 pickups, vintage nitro finish, and all. This SG’s fast, comfortable SlimTaper neck; bound rosewood fingerboard, and Plek’d frets make for action that’s almost nonexistent. The SG’s lightweight, sleekly contoured mahogany body delivers great sustain and no pain, even if you gig all night. And the vintage nitro finish looks and feels stupendous while enhancing the tone of this legendary rock machine. Own your piece of rock history: the Gibson SG Special.

Dare to sound different

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that the P-90 offers a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Gibson’s first successful single-coil pickup, the P-90 can be heard on countless classic recordings. With its biting treble and high output, the P-90 cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume pot. It’s an amazingly versatile pickup with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 really wails. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible with humbuckers — or with other single-coils, for that matter. To hear P-90s brilliantly deployed in historical context, check out Santana’s fiery Woodstock performance, the Who’s masterful Live at Leeds album — or any number of classic Beatles tunes.

SlimTaper neck and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the SG Special. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s fast SlimTaper neck profile comfortably fits your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so that no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the SG Special a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The SG Special has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Sweet p90 tone

Stunning Guitar With An Amazing Sound

This guitar is visually stunning….photos do not do it justice as the metallic burgundy truly sparkles from all angles. Then you actually pick it up and the feeling is just right…great weight, amazing neck and the build quality is outstanding. And then you play it and wow….the P90s sound spectacular in this mahogany solid body.

This is my 7th guitar from Sweetwater and they are the very best….and hats off to Greg Savino as his attention to quality serivce is the benchmark. I feel like I have my own, personal music equipment consultant (and buddy) completely focused on helping me get the very most out of my buying experience.

I'll never buy from anyone else!
Music background: Active guitarist playing rock and the blues.

Incredible guitar with vintage vibe

I just got one yesterday. I've been wanting the Pelham Blue version for a while and couldn't find one locally. I read so many people say how beautiful the Burgundy color was, so when one came available, I went to look at it. I'm sure the Pelham Blue is equally as beautiful but good lord this guitar is stunning. More importantly, it is light, fast playing and the P90's fill that niche right between my American Strat and my Les Paul standard. I've had this guitar for just over 24 hours and somehow it has already become my favorite after having my strat for 16 years and my Les Paul for 3 years. This guitar is absolute perfection. Gibson hit a home run with this.

Pure Fun

I had recently played a new SG Standard, and really loved the light weight and thin body, as well as the super fast and comfortable neck. Honestly, this was also a bit of an impulse purchase to acquire the classic double horn, rock icon. I selected the Special for the p90 pickups, and they did not disappoint. They fill a unique niche between the fatter humbuckers and the thinner, twangy Fender single coils. This is versatile enough to be a serious candidate for "the only electric guitar you need for any occasion." It works well for blues or jazz tones, and can offer pretty impressive twangy, almost telecaster-like country sounds. Of course, the p90's are famous for biting hard rock output on high gain. The finish on this guitar is beautiful, and the included hard shell case is very nice. (The Standard comes with a pretty nice gig bag). The included strap seems a bit underwhelming at first, but actually works okay on this super light guitar. I often find myself grabbing this electric because it is such fun to play. Finally, I must mention the service provided by Greg Baum and Sweetwater. I submitted my order at 1 PM on Tuesday, and it arrived at 11AM on Wednesday!

19 sg special, the rest of my story!

This is really a fantastic Gibson that is wow vintage feel smell and playability. While it is so vintage sounding that you heard long ago by the Beatles, or Angus young ac dc I have found Angus young to be right when he said the intonation was terrible. Sometimes you need really good intonation. He did I do, so with a better bridge I have fixed the problem. It still has all the wonderfull vintage p-90 sound and is a Gibson sg and sounds perfect! It is still a sg, a pure rock guitar that feels like heaven in your hand. Gibson sg! There is no substitute. AC⚡DC will live forever. Thanks sweetwater.
