Micro-sized Club Kit for On-the-go Drummers

A micro-sized, affordable club kit with an incredible sound — you'll get that and much more with the Sonor AQX Micro shell pack from Sweetwater. The Sonor AQX Micro is the most portable kit in the Sonor AQX line, presenting an ultra-lightweight variation on a common club kit configuration that gigging drummers will truly appreciate. From cafes to small clubs and worship services, the Sonor AQX Micro shines in intimate venues, with a vintage tone derived from its 100% poplar shells. Plus, the Sonor AQX Micro kit includes Sonor’s SmartMount tom and cymbal mount, which maximizes the resonance of your rack tom while providing plenty of flexibility for positioning a crash or ride cymbal. A serious performer, the Sonor AQX Micro is one of the finest-sounding — not to mention, best-looking — kits at its size and price point.

100% poplar shells for pure tone

Poplar has been a popular choice of drum manufacturers for decades for making economical, great-sounding instruments, and the Sonor AQX’s all-poplar shells are oozing with old school charm. Tonally similar to birch, poplar boasts a medium attack, with a pleasantly bright top end and a satisfying thump, which is ideal for a range of tunings.

Die-cast lugs and SmartMount system

The Sonor AQX Micro is outfitted with the same die-cast lugs found on other Sonor AQX series kits. These attractive lugs ensure tight, accurate tuning, as well as durability that will withstand the most rigorous of gigging schedules. Additionally, the Sonor AQX Micro comes equipped with the lug-contacting SmartMount tom and cymbal mounting system. This unique design prevents direct shell contact to maximize resonance and sustain.

Sonor AQX Micro 4-piece Shell Pack Features:

  • Most portable kit in the Sonor AQX line
  • Balances tone, response, control, portability, and affordability
  • 100% poplar shells boast a medium attack, a bright top end, and a focused thump
  • Ideal for a range of tunings

Eye catching and enough tight thud from the kick drum....

First off, Im not a drummer and basically bought this for my practice space since space is not at a premium for our humble little practice area in the basement. My draw to getting a smaller set was also fueled by an artist from Madison that had a drummer who was playing on a thrown together jazz kit that the kick drum may have been a converted floor tom. I was impressed with the tighter sound coming from this either small kick drum or converted kick drum as I hadnt asked the drummer at hand about the composition of his kit. But again it stuck in my mind as to possibly getting one down the road to replace my Ludwig Accent house set.
That being said, a couple years later and a new drummer now in my originals band, the talk of a jazz came up and by chance my current drummer had a converted Pearl set which sounded great and above all took up less space. So, he brought it over and I was sold on the idea of having a jazz kit now to replace my Ludwig Accent set. Granted when I bought the Ludwig set, the smaller club sets weren't quite the rage or variety that there is now. So though I liked the Pearl set the drummer had (almost got the mid town), I was still alittle bit stuck on price and options.
I thought about the Quest Love set by Ludwig, but read some reviews about craftsmanship issues, so I steered away from that set. I liked the Sonor set because it has this added arm for a cymbal crash which works great with my current drummer because he likes using 4 cymbals as I kept the old Ludwig sets cymbal hardware to boot.
Again, after practice this last weekend, he packed up his converted Pearl set and assembled my Sonor set and after assembling it and playing it, he was rather impressed and for the price, I think he might end up getting one and selling his converted Pearl set. Again, the kick drum had this thud that was tight and certainly loud enough for our practices or a typical bar if miking isnt an option. And the full size snare had a nice snappy ring to it.
Again, hearing my drummer go through the motions, you didnt at all feel like you were listening to a toy drum set by any means. This set is gig ready if need be. I gave this 4 stars on account it would have been nice to have some cheap shell covers or at least a snare stand. But over all, the look and sound is every bit worth the money for folks on a budget.
