Beautifully Balanced Ribbon-mic Sound!

Between its internally shockmounted 1.8-micron ribbon element and custom-engineered transformer, the Rode NTR ribbon microphone offers you clear, clean, and impressively detailed sound. Whether you're capturing a painstakingly crafted guitar tone, laying down horns, or tracking vocals, you'll be amazed not only by the extremely open sound of the NTR but by the naturally present high-frequency range, which is so often lacking in ribbon mics. On top of that, the NTR is built tough, keeping it safe from daily wear and tear.

Amazing high-end detail straight from the mic

Sweetwater Sales Engineers have had a long-time love affair with ribbon microphones, which is why they took special note of the the Rode NTR ribbon mic's unique character. The most striking thing about this ribbon microphone is its high-frequency balance, which reaches your mic pre with all of the high-frequency presence that typically requires a studio-grade EQ to achieve. As a result, the NTR offers you a much more usable sound right off the bat than the vast majority of ribbon microphones on the market.

Rode NTR Ribbon Microphone Features:
  • High-performance ribbon microphone designed for serious studio work
  • Super-sensitive 1.8-micron ribbon element picks up a wide dynamic range
  • Internally shockmounted to cut out movement noise and vibration
  • Custom transformer brings out the high-frequencies missing from many ribbon mics
  • Chassis protected by a heavy-duty matte black finish
  • All components engineered and manufactured in-house by Rode

Great modern ribbon

Grabbed up a stereo pair and used them with a BAE 1073 for drums rooms. They sounded fantastic and are very low noise so I could really crank the compression. They are slightly brighter than a traditional ribbon but have fantastic transient response.

Also used it (backed off the cone about a foot) with a 57 on a fender twin reverb for some driven country telecaster leads and it added such fatness I needed almost no eq.

Used it on acoustics with a km184 on the neck and the NTR near the players head looking down and it captured a great body and room feel.

Really stunning mics! Quite heavy as well so make sure you have sturdy mic stands.

Beautiful sound! Easy to use. VERY solid construction.

I bought the NTR to add to my collection of microphones. I have a very simple DAW: lap top, UA Arrow Interface, and I went with an active ribbon just to make sure I was good to go with my current set up. This is a wonderful sounding mic: very smooth and round, and takes EQ beautifully. It's very well constructed. There is a set screw on the top of the mic that prevents the ribbon from moving while transporting or setting up the mic. It works great. The delivery guy pretty much slammed the box down on my porch, and when I opened it, the contents had shifted and the mic box was just against the side of the packing box on one side, so I was afraid that it had been damaged in shipping. Nope. Works perfectly. The box it comes in and the set screw do a great job of protecting it. I'm pretty much a newbie at home recording, and this mic has been very easy to use. The video is the first test I did of right out of the box. Levels aren't perfect, but I just wanted to do a quick test to make sure it was working.

Great for Piano, Marimba and Vibes!

I've used my pair of Rode NTR ribbon mics for about three years now. Out of our mic locker of 60 solid mics, including several other vintage ribbons going back to the 1960s, the NTR mics get used a lot! Ribbon mics can be fragile, but these are solid. And being phantom powered, they eliminate the worry of accidentally plugging in an older design ribbon mic with phantom power engaged (which can damage the ribbon).

They are the most hi-fi sounding ribbons I've ever used. I especially like these as a mellow but detailed alternative pair on grand piano. They are equally great on super-percussive instruments like marimba, vibes, kit overheads. Work equally well on guitar cabs. Oh, and on a brass choir!

One of my best jazz trumpet recordings used a single NTR up close, paired with a vintage Sennheiser MD441 (another great trumpet mic). In the end, we blended the NTR and MD441 to suit our tastes. The artist loved it.
Music background: Classical, Jazz, Rock, for many decades.

I dropped mine too

On a concrete floor. Dented the metal casing around the ribbon and still works fine. I have other ribbons from Cascade and a vintage Oktava (the square one) which I love for their darkness, but this thing gets so much more information...the realness of acoustic stuff just shines. AND I actually use it on a small bass cab (Fender Rumble series) just half foot off the same concrete floor I dropped it on and it sounds amazing. Imagine that, a ribbon on a bass cab!!

Superb on saxophone

I’ve been trying various saxophone microphones for decades. I find to get the big, fat sound I like, it is difficult. The NTR is the best I’ve tried. The higher frequency is not ‘brittle’ or too bright, the bottom is ‘big’ without being ‘boomy’.
Since high end is there, it can be rolled off in EQ later if desired, or left as is depending on the mix.

Levels are very good, it is also very quiet and I don’t notice much if any noise being added.
Some of the large diaphragm condensers I’ve tried work pretty well, but this is much better - cleaner, more precise sound. (At least I think so).
