Sweet-sounding Martin Dreadnought

This Martin D16-E emanates with richness and warmth from its mahogany body and spruce top. One strum and you'll be struck by its full, round tone and ultra-smooth top end. The Martin D-16EM features a scalloped, forward-shifted spruce X bracing that draws out the guitar's most flattering characteristics by providing balanced, clear resonance and powerful, room-filling projection. The luxurious tone, coupled with a comfortable dreadnought body shape, makes the D-16EM ideal for singer-songwriters, and its distinguished sound sits impeccably in full-band arrangements. When you're out gigging and need to electrify, the D-16EM's Fishman Matrix VT Enhance NT2 pickup system delivers pristine amplification that retains all of the guitar's nuance. A favorite of guitarists at Sweetwater, Martin guitars are revered for good reason, and the all-mahogany D16-EM is an excellent example of Martin's dedication to artful designs, supreme tone, and matchless quality.

Proprietary electronics

Martin and Fishman have been working together for over 30 years in an effort to build the best acoustic-electric guitars on the market. And they recently teamed up again to create the Matrix VT Enhance NT2 pickup system that you'll find in the D-16EM. This system consists of Fishman's popular Matrix under-saddle pickup and an advanced Enhance element that can be blended into the signal separately via the soundhole-mounted controls. The Enhance function lets the natural sounds of the guitar come through, which is ideal for players using techniques such as body tapping.

A cornerstone of modern music

Martin's early dreadnoughts set into motion the guitar's prominent role in modern music and set the standard for tone quality in acoustic guitars. Martin dreadnoughts became known for resonant warm tones, quality craftsmanship, and tasteful styling. For those reasons, Martin guitars became an important part of the music written and performed by the stars of the 1920s and '30s. Post-WWII, the Martin dreadnought became a cornerstone of the folk and folk-rock music of the '50s and '60s. The powerful voice and full sound of these iconic instruments have made them a staple in the bluegrass world, but their bold sonic signature is heard cross-genre. That's why Martin dreadnoughts are staples in the arsenals of the performing acoustic guitarists at Sweetwater.

The same body shape at a comfortable depth

When you play the D-16E for the first time, you may notice that the body feels different from other Martin dreadnoughts. It retains the same square shoulder shape but is slightly thinner than normal. Instead of the traditional dreadnought body depth of 4-7/8-inches, Martin opted to give this guitar the depth of a 000 — 4-1/8-inches. This change affects the guitar in two notable ways. First, the thinner body reigns in the boomy bass response for cleaner recording. Second, it helps the guitar to create a more mid-forward response. Don't fret, even with its new body depth, the D-16E retains the same room-filling power that you expect from a Martin dreadnought

The CF Martin legacy

What hasn't been said about the CF Martin company? Martin — a name virtually synonymous with the acoustic guitar — took root in the United States in 1833 with a small shop in lower Manhattan. Five years later, Christian Frederick Martin moved his business and family to the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, where Martin has been located ever since. From the Dreadnought body shape to the 14-fret neck, Martin innovations paralleled (and indeed, drove) the development of the acoustic guitar itself. When you play any Martin guitar, you're holding a piece of music history.

This is MY guitar

I've had my D-16 for a little over a month now and couldn't be more pleased with it. It looks simple and beautiful, the sound is phenominal. Clear and even across the spectrum, great response and projection and after many hours has still not let me down and will only get better with time. I'm not a very technical person but wanted to leave as descriptive of a review as possible so we know it's spruce & mahogany, ebony board etc., but all things are subjective and different people like different things so I can really only try to get across why I like it. To be clear though it is a dread shape and 000 depth if that concerns you. All I know is it's perfect for my styles (mostly blues and jazz fingerstyle hybrid with a Jimi feel to it and a heavy thumb on the low notes if that makes any sense or means anything at all) So I've got the big boxy D shape for my thumpy lead thumb and the 000 depth provides just an extra bit of comfort and I think doing something for note separation and clarity. A great guitar plays you as much as you play it and this d-16 can't seem to put me down. No matter the style, I believe this guitar will adjust to you and respond to anything you put into it. I'm in the Martin camp now for life and feel that there really is just a hint of magic that comes with the name on the headstock. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? I believe. And as always the Sweetwater team and Jordan Garrett are true pros of the business. They are helpful and they ship fast. Got my guitar in just under 2 days. Five stars all around, you are all awesome and right now I feel I own the best guitar on the planet and will buy my 'next' best guitar on the planet from Sweetwater.

So to sum it all up
PROS: Sound, feel, looks and Sweetwater
CONS: I didn't buy it sooner

Perfect, all around

Product, and service were perfect.

Guitar sounds and looks fantastic, is extremely easy to play, the slightly shallow body is very comfortable.

I hope to have this guitar for a very long time.

My sales engineer was away, but the rest of the Sweetwater team was on top of everything.

I dare anybody to tell me why I should buy from somewhere else!

A pleasure to play

Absolutely love this guitar. Slim neck makes it real easy to play. I use Martin silk and steel strings for a sweet mellow tone. If you choose this guitar you can't go wrong.

Martin D16E

I love the D16. I didn't purchase this guitar from Sweetwater, but I did purchase a OOO-15SM from Sweetwater which was outstanding. The service from Sweetwater was also outstanding. I bought this from a local mom and pop shop where I played it before i purchased. Really easy to fret as the action is great. When I play chords it chimes like a grandfather clock. I love it. I like the OOO depth because I already have an OM and a OOO. I got the mahogany version because I eventually want to get an HD-28 (rosewood) which I will purchase one day from Sweetwater.

Martin D-16E Mahogany

Sweetwater delivered the guitar quickly and well packaged. Good service all the way around.
The Martin D-16e is a good guitar for the money. It sounds good, looks nice, and is very comfortable to play. I have three other Martin's (D-28, 000-18, and D-Jr). When compared to them I only have two minor negatives with the D-16. I seem to have to work a little harder to get good hammered notes compared to my other guitars. That certainly could be more me than the guitar. I also find the bridge pins to be a bit spindly. Both of these things are very minor. Overall I am pleased with the guitar and glad I purchased it. For anyone looking for a good acoustic-electric that would make a great gigging guitar, I would suggest making the D-16E one of the ones that you check out.
