Perfect for Planes

Looking for a compact acoustic guitar that you can carry onto an airplane? The Journey Instruments PJ410N Puddle Jumper is just that. As its name suggests, this acoustic-electric is great for musicians taking short flights. Why? Because it folds into a TSA-compliant carry-on backpack and fits under most airline seats or rides hands-free on your back. Don't let the novelty-factor fool you; the PJ410N carries high-end tonewoods, modern construction methods, and a carbon fiber-reinforced neck that make it a force to be reckoned with when compared to other guitars in its price range. Its built with a solid Sitka spruce top with layered mahogany back and sides to create a compelling tone.

Patented removable neck is designed for travel

Thanks to its patented removable neck system, Journey Instruments’ PJ410 acoustic guitar can be assembled and disassembled in a matter of seconds. Simply undo the wingnut on the back, and it collapses into a size that's great for storage and travel. It has a string retainer behind the nut that makes putting the neck on a breeze. You won't have to put strings back in their saddles or deal with re-stringing every time you take a road trip.

Journey Instruments PJ410N Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Acoustic guitar with travel-ready backpack
  • Patented removable neck system collapses the guitar to a size that can be carried on to most commercial airplanes
  • "C"-shaped neck profile sits comfortably in your hands
  • Solid Sitka spruce top delivers impressive projection and nuanced attack

Almost the Perfect Travel Guitar

I've owned this guitar for over a year now and been on many a "Journey" with it (can't help myself). And I truly believe this is the best travel guitar out there for the money. For reference, I travel light, and almost never check a bag. I wanted something that could pass as a personal item along with a normal size carry-on bag, which led me to the Puddle Jumper. It's unique in this space and price range, as far as I know. There might be one or two expensive options out there, but who wants to carry a $ guitar on vacation, right? Credit to Sweetwater - using the guitar gallery photos, I chose one with a particularly nice wood grain through the neck. I can't say enough good things about the quality of construction for a ~$ guitar. This guitar feels solidly built. The seams between top, sides and back are very clean. The neck is great to play - thin but wide enough that it doesn't have that "small guitar" feel. The frets are well done - no sprout here.

I actually really like the sound of this guitar. I haven't A-B'd it against similar sized guitars, but to my ears it's nice and bright, and loud enough, for example, to play outside on a windy night near the ocean. I generally play a lot of fingerstyle folk-ish acoustic and it's nice and snappy for that, while also a great sounding strumming guitar. It's a parlor size thing so don't expect big dreadnought sounds, but it's a comfortable, inspiring instrument to play. I enjoy it enough that I keep it around the living room for casual pick up use.

For comparison I've owned an electric Traveler brand model, and absolutely hated it. Sharp fret ends, uncomfortable to play, weird shape and neck dive, requires a little amp and headphones. Not fun to play, and not worth the effort to carry around. This thing sounds and feels like a real guitar, which is exactly what I wanted.

Puddle Jumper assembly / disassembly is a breeze. The neck joint is a clever system, and seems very secure once things are tightened down. Everything comes in a super functional bag, including some pockets to stash stuff while on travel, and a bottle holder on one side - nice touch. The front pocket isn't quite big enough to fit my laptop - but your mileage may vary. The size and weight is just right for me. It'll technically fit under a seat, unless you're on a plane with those power brick things under there. I'm tall and cramped so I usually find a spot for it in the overhead bin. The key thing here is it's small enough that you should never need to gate check.

Note: I'm not a setup pro, but I do tweak a truss rod here and there. Journey includes a couple of tools along with a shim kit and spare saddle for adjustment - definitely keep these in the bag. If you're moving between areas with very different humidity, the guitar takes a little time to settle in. You might need to add a shim or two, tune up several times, etc. This all feels normal, but likely not a problem that affects the higher priced carbon fiber models.

I do have to nitpick the standard tuners included in the box. It's weird because there was a grover tag included in my original packaging, but these are unbranded generic tuners. They work, but on a guitar that routinely gets taken apart, decent locking tuners take one variable out of the mix, and just make things way more consistent. I would have gladly paid the extra $50 to have them in the stock setup, but I recently swapped in a set of actual Grover mini locking tuners (available here on sweetwater). This was easy and a worthy upgrade.

Bottomline, this is really the best travel guitar out there in this form factor. On vacation when I have time to play, I want a guitar that's easy to transport and inspiring to pick up. And this guitar gives me that. I can take it on a plane and have it on a Kauai beach that night, and there's something special about that.

It is a good airline travel guitar

I was having serious concerns when the box arrived as it was almost full size. When I opened the box though inside was a much smaller box with backpack containing the guitar. I put it together and the action seemed super high, like I have to return this too high. Then I noticed a shim pack in the bag and looked that up. Installed the super easy shim pack and the action is nice, even another saddle in the kit to lower it more if I wanted too. The playability is good but gets a little tight up around the 12th fret. The sound is good and louder than I expected. Occasionally sounds like small guitar (which it is) but the feel is nice. This guitar is going to be perfect to take on the plane and travel with without worrying about storage and will it fit. This is the smallest in the Journey instruments line so I expect the bigger ones will have a larger sound but I need compact plane travel size. The Puddlejumper fits my needs.
