Takes Tonal Adaptability to New Extremes

Saying that the Ibanez Prestige AZ2204N is a versatile solidbody electric guitar is massive understatement. Its Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups tackle bluesy licks and metal riffage with equal aplomb, while its dyna-MIX9 switching system provides nine different pickup combinations for an endless supply of tones. It looks great as well, boasting a balanced-sounding alder body framed by an eye-catching tortoiseshell pickguard. Enjoy unprecedented comfort and stability, thanks to an ergonomic rear body contour, S-Tech roasted maple neck, and a slick-playing compound-radius rosewood fingerboard. Bend, twist, and dive-bomb with perfect intonation thanks to the AZ2204N’s Gotoh T1702 tremolo. Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners, an oil-impregnated bone nut, and luminescent side dots round out the AZ2204N’s top-shelf feature set.

S-Tech roasted maple neck offers stability and durability

The AZ2204N’s roasted maple neck was subjected to Ibanez’s S-Tech nitrogen-heating treatment, which increases its stability, durability, water resistance, and tolerance to temperature changes. The neck is then sealed with oil, resulting in a well-played feel. And it’s supremely comfortable — its fingerboard edge was finished with a smooth curve that extends through the border between the fingerboard and the neck to the fingerboard itself. Beyond that, this guitar’s oil-finished AZ oval "C"-shaped neck fills your hand nicely at the lower frets, while providing a more modern feel when you’re playing up high. You also get an oil-impregnated bone nut for maximum resonance and superior tuning stability.

Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups yield an endless array of tones

The Ibanez AZ2204N’s Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickups are among the most sonically flexible we’ve heard here at Sweetwater. Laid out in an HSS configuration, these pickups deliver warm blues licks, shred-heavy metal riffs, and everything in between with the utmost in dynamics and clarity — even in high-gain situations. Beyond that, Ibanez’s dyna-MIX9 switching system provides nine different sound combinations and can shift between humbucker and single-coil modes with a flick of a mini toggle. You can even simulate a humbucking sound by combining the two single-coil pickups. Whatever tone you’re hearing in your head, the AZ2204N can achieve it.

Gotoh T1702 tremolo provides excellent tuning stability

Developed in collaboration with Gotoh, the AZ2204N’s T1702 tremolo features brass saddles and a brass sustain block, which ensure a natural, warm tone with quick response and amazing articulation. String skipping and hybrid picking are effortless thanks to narrow string spacing. Loading the guitar’s tremolo arm is a breeze, by virtue of the T1702’s snap-and-hold socket, and its arm torque adjuster allows for fine adjustments without any tools. The T1702’s stud lock screws lock the stud bolts in place, enhancing the instrument’s resonance and providing excellent tuning stability. Beyond that, the T1702’s non-recessed design provides an astoundingly smooth tremolo motion that's ideal for neo-soul-type players.

The AZ2204N's dyna-MIX9 switching system provides 9 different pickup combinations.

Only guitar you need

Over the years I've purchased and built several guitars. This has given me a kind of idea of what to look out for, markers of quality that when they appear let me know the builder took seriously the quality of the instrument.

When I saw this guitar, I was immediately struck. This instrument has features not seen in guitars in the sub $ price range, and more often seen in models $ more expensive. Locking tuners, bone nut, stainless steel jumbo frets (great for a light touch, and no need to refret, ever), a roasted maple neck, tapered neck heel for higher fret access, insanely versatile pickup scheme, simplified control layout, a two point Gotoh bridge for better tuning stability and flutter on the vibrato, block saddles for better sitting of the strings, brass block, enlarged strap buttons so no need for strap locks, premium hard shell case, beautiful antique white blonde finish, and Made In Japan.

The pickups are very versatile, balancing perfectly vintage guitar sounds with what guitar players need to deal with today. In total, there are nine different sounds, toggled through by the switch on the front of the guitar:

a) Standard S style
1) Neck
2) Neck + Middle (parallel)
3) Middle
4) Middle + Bridge (parallel, split humbucker bridge)
5) Bridge (humbucker)

b) Custom
1) Neck + Middle (series)
2) Neck + Bridge (parallel, split humbucker bridge)
3) Neck + Middle + Bridge (series)
4) Bridge (single coil split on humbucker bridge)
5) Bridge (humbucker)

The a) Standard S style has the strat sounds, neck has beautiful bassy cleans, middle has a balanced clean that could stand in for an acoustic guitar, bridge is full and the humbucker fixes the thinness of the bridge by itself, and the 2) and 4) positions have the quack and glassiness you'd expect.

For the b) Custom, you cover all the sounds another set of guitars might give you. 1) is a neck humbucker, great for jazz lines and compressed, bassier leads. 2) is the tele middle position, perfect for Johnny Marr style cleans and surf rock sounds. 3) is the highest output you can get, all pickups in series to really hit an amp with the highest output possible to get it to distort. 4) gives you the spaghetti western/country twang, and the bridge humbucker is the same as the first position, perfect for higher gain settings.

This guitar fixes all the issues for an S style guitar that other companies can't change due to a legacy customer base that go apoplectic if a guitar isn't exactly as it was from 1960, and is in my opinion the only guitar you need. It hits perfectly all the features of a premium instrument, with modern features in a vintage appearance, at an incredible price point, and is an absolute steal for what you get.

Flawless

This guitar was a wonderful surprise find. I was testing out PRS's Fiore and a few other PRS's, but decided to try this one on a whim. As soon as I started playing it, I was impressed with the feel. The stainless steel frets are super smooth, the satin neck feels fantastic, and the pickup sounds are diverse and flexible. I've owned the guitar for almost six months now and it has been nothing but reliable and stable. I own a number of Ibanez, PRS, and Fender guitars and I love how this bridges the gap between my Ibanez RGs and my Fender Strat.
