Rock Basic

Since 1954, the Gibson Les Paul Junior has added a cool, straightforward vibe to the world of rock music. Over half a century later, the Jr. is still a favorite among players everywhere. It’s no coincidence that leagues of players got their start with this guitar — and come back to it time and time again. Made from solid mahogany and finished in classic nitrocellulose lacquer, this Junior gives you an impressively rich and detailed tone. Its vintage ’50s neck is a pleasure to play, and you just can’t beat the sound of a P-90 pickup. Under the hood, the control assembly is handwired with matched potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors. Get back to basics with the Gibson Les Paul Junior.

P-90 pickups: dare to sound different

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that the P-90 offers a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Gibson’s first successful single-coil pickup, the P-90 can be heard on countless classic recordings. With its biting treble and high output, the P-90 cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume pot. It’s an amazingly versatile pickup with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 really wails. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible with humbuckers — or with other single-coils, for that matter. To hear P-90s brilliantly deployed in historical context, check out Santana’s fiery Woodstock performance or the Who’s masterful Live at Leeds album.

Vintage ’50s neck and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the Les Paul Junior. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s vintage ’50s neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and the frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the Les Paul Junior a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Les Paul Junior has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Les Paul Junior Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Mahogany body; gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish
  • Mahogany neck, vintage ’50s profile, gloss nitro finish
  • Rosewood fingerboard, 12" radius, acrylic dot inlays
  • 24.75" scale length; 22 medium jumbo frets

What a Guitar!

I've been wanting one of these for quite some time, but it just never worked out. I'm accustomed to playing pretty nice guitars, so I wasn't sure whether to go with this one (the USA model) or a Custom Shop. I decided to go with the USA model at the recommendation of my great rep at Sweetwater, Zack. I'm absolutely thrilled with the quality, playability and sound of this classic guitar. It was great right out of the box. I had the nut adjusted, but that's only because I play 11's and it came setup for 10's and there were some tuning stability issues when I changed strings. I also changed out the knobs fora more classic look. Now it's great and is an absolute BEAST! I highly recommend this guitar.

A Mind Blowing, Simple Guitar

I purchased my Gibson Les Paul Junior a few weeks ago and I couldn't be more pleased with it. This guitar does a couple of things for me. The first is that it very much reminds me of my first electric guitar, way back in 1966 with the single PU. Back then it was a lipstick PU, but a single nonetheless. I had heard that the single P90 was not going to sound like you'd expect on a LP Junior, since it didn't have the magnetic interference of a second PU. Interference is not necessarily a bad thing, but in this case I think am reasonably confident that they were right. The single P90 has a very unique sound that is subject to change with your playing style. I can get tones out of this guitar that I never dreamed anyone could with just a single PU. You better believe I recommend this guitar.

Finally found the Right One

This is my 4th LP Jr.----I had two from 2015(neck too wide, robo tuners I had to swap out, etc), a '58 Jr.(too expensive to play out with)...and then this gem from 2019. While the neck is not as beefy as one on the LP Jr. from 1958 that I used to own, this neck is comfortable and plays well with great action. The P90 sounds wonderful and smooth---it depends on how you nuance the volume and tone controls---but in it's simplicity you can see how this 'Student' guitar gained popularity amongst professionals. The sunburst on mine is perfect, the nitro finish a plus, the rosewood fingerboard pattern reminds me of Brazilian, the case top notch. Stays in tune relatively well and not tuning keys not stiff as vintage LP Jr. tuners can be a challenge to work with.

If you can find one, give it a try and explore the world of the single P90---this one is a welcome addition to my 'stable'!

One Super Sweet Guitar

Been banging this around for a month. High Quality make. No flaws, very few adjustments needed out of the box. Orange drop cap is fine w/ this thing & the P-90 is screaming. Tone knob can do the woman tone & everything in between. A solid blues guitar.

Thank you Zack!

Fantastic instrument, a blast to play

This guitar is f-u-n! It is light, resonant, and dynamic. You see the 2 knobs, and it is easy to assume that it is not very flexible, but that assumption would be wrong. It is simple to twist either or both knobs and get a ton of variety. Honestly, I wish I started with this guitar years ago.

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
