Monitoring to a Higher Standard

The Dynaudio LYD 48 will take your monitoring accuracy — and your mixes — to a higher level of professionalism. As the new flagship of the LYD range, the LYD 48 builds upon the strengths of its 2-way stablemates, and as a 3-way tri-amplified studio monitor, it achieves superior across-the-board performance. In a 2-way design, the woofer has to work very hard to reproduce the low frequencies as well as a portion of the midrange. Another inherent disadvantage is that the crossover to the tweeter is taking place within that all-important midrange — where the vocal tracks are most vibrant, where your guitars have girth and body, and generally where mixes either shine or fall flat. Having a dedicated midrange driver (and amp) delivers sweeping benefits, including solid bass extension, improved midrange purity, lower distortion, higher SPL capability, and overall accuracy. Suitable for both nearfield and midfield applications, the value-packed Dynaudio LYD 48 will help you make better recordings.

The benefits of 3-way monitoring

If you've never worked on 3-way monitors before, you're in for a treat: increased accuracy, extended frequency response, optimized sound staging, and more. Having three dedicated drivers to handle the lows, mids, and highs; and crossover points that avoid the critical midrange frequencies; the Dynaudio LYD 48 is able to provide astonishing clarity across the frequency spectrum — and particularly in the critical midrange, an area that is often compromised by the existence of a crossover point in 2-way monitor designs. It also means that the 8" woofer, freed from the burden of midrange duties, can do what it does best: deliver beefy, extended bass response. Likewise, the tweeter can concentrate on serving up silky, extended highs. Having the most important part of the frequency spectrum — the midrange — reproduced by a separate driver gives the Dynaudio LYD 48 an incredibly neutral midrange response that's critical for proper placement of lead vocals and solo instruments in your mix.

Dynaudio knows what they're doing

At Sweetwater, Dynaudio commands respect. With over three decades of experience building speaker drivers, the Danish company knows what goes into a great monitor speaker. Add to that 20-plus years of producing professional monitors for top studios, and you have a company perspective that few pro audio manufacturers can match. Dynaudio's proprietary driver technologies produce monitors that are neutral and uncolored. This silky clarity, in combination with amazing dynamic capabilities, deliver monitors that let you work marathon sessions without ear fatigue — all while producing superior-sounding results.

Honest sound!

After returning a pair of ribbon speakers that produced overly sharp sound, I opted for a 3-way monitor instead. These monitors are a testament to honest sound reproduction, devoid of any embellishments or coloration. They excel in delivering clear and well-defined bass, mid, and high frequencies, which has significantly improved my mixing workflow, particularly in the control and clarity of the mid-range. Unlike the clouded mid-range produced by the ribbon monitors, these monitors offer a transparent and accurate representation of sound.

Furthermore, these monitors allow me to decrease the volume while still maintaining a clear understanding of the audio being mixed. In contrast, the ribbon speakers, with their exaggerated highs and lackluster mid-range, prioritize booming bass over accurate sound reproduction. For those seeking authenticity and true representation of their audio, these monitors undoubtedly outshine the competition.

To validate my experience, I conducted a comparison test by playing the same mix on both the ribbon speakers and these monitors in my 5.1 home audio room. The outcome was indisputable – the Dynaudio monitors emerged as the clear victor, solidifying their superiority in delivering true-to-life sound.

Unbelievable!

I rarely write reviews unless a piece of gear really blows me out of the water. I'm coming from Shape 65's and really can't believe the difference...especially considering they're in a very similar price range. Everything is so much more open, I can hear the separation across the stereo field mic better now, bass extension is much better...minor adjustments in comp, eq and effects are so much more noticeable, to make better mix decisions. I really did not think I would notice this amount of difference. I found the Focal's to be harsh in the upper mids and the Dyn's are much smoother. I have yet to put a full day in on them, but I imagine my ears will not get fatigued as quickly from now on. I can't compare to any other 3-ways or higher end speakers but compared to HS8's, Focal Alpha's and Shape 65's, these offer a night and day difference. Really looking forward to spending some significant time on them...and I imagine they'll get even better after the recommended break in period!

These monitors are a dream come true

The argument for 3-ways was very convincing and I'm so glad I went with Dynaudio. My rep, Ryan, recommended them, and after reading up on them I was convinced that 3-ways would be better for mixing. I know very successful engineers have mixed on much less, but not me. My mixes on these require very little tweaking, if any, when checked in other platforms. The mids are so accurate with no confusion from a mid-crossover. Finally finally finally I can mix what I hear accurately and know that's what it actually is. I couldn't be more pleased.

Beyond Expectations

I had been trying to get my hands on some Adams for a LONG time but the Pandemic made it near impossible. I put in an order for some but they were on persistent back order. During that time I was looking at everything remotely close in price range, even far above my budget. I kept coming across all these reviews lauding the Dynaudios. From pros to audiophiles, extremely high praise. I was mostly interested in what mix engineers were saying. The true 3 way makes a difference, etc. Nothing bad ever, outside of the occasional remark that they wont get super loud for client wow factor. I don't have a huge room so not a big problem for me. My existing JBLS on their last legs and me struggling with them, could not wait any longer and went for these.

All of the reviews are spot on. These things are impressive. Accurate, extremely detailed without being harsh or fatiguing. If there is something wrong in your mix you will hear it. If there is something wrong with the recording it will stand out. Problem areas leap out and you have no choice but to fix them or they WILL become annoying and grating. I was a little worried because to begin with during break in they felt maybe too crispy and bright. They calmed down after about 18-24 hours of break in. I feel like I'm able to hear deep into mixes now. SO much easier to dial mixes in. Everything is so obvious, transparent and floating out there in front of me. I can hear even the smallest changes with EQ and compressor. Much easier to hear the flavor from a tiny amount of reverb or parallel compression. Placing instruments and separating them is absolutely faster now. I don't have to work so hard to "hear". Even better is that everything translates.

Need to get a little distance on them for the best imaging. While I suppose you could get right up on them they seem to open up between 3 and 4 feet. Oh and don't bother trying to listen to any of the average everyday streaming services. I was checking out some of my playlists on a few streaming services. Oof. These speakers are not flattering to poorly mastered songs or services with low bitrate and compression artifacts.

These are excellent tools. I am very happy with this purchase. Honestly IM glad I didn't hear the cores before buying these because my wallet would probably be a lot lighter. I am seriously considering purchasing the sub so I have a matched system.

Greatest Studio Monitors!

I work in a small and well treated room and this is a MAJOR upgrade in all categories for me. I feel the kick is solid and the bass is thick but not exaggerated like with most monitors. The mids and highs are also incredibily detailed. The Lyd48 adapts perfectly to my room and I find myself listening at much lower volumes than before instead of turning it up for "hype." I'm not sure what it is but these monitors make the imaging feel incredibly precise! I literally feel as if everything in mono (vocals, bass, kick, etc..) is coming from my computer screen (located in between the monitors) instead of the lyd48's! I would definitely recommend anyone who is looking for a studio upgrade. Best of all, I haven't even taken the time to calibrate them yet with Sonarworks and they sound fantastic as is!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

The immersive mixing experience that the LYD 48s produce is truly enthralling. I was able to hear issues with my mixes that just weren’t there on my old monitors. The speakers reproduce my mixes in such a clear, balanced way that I felt like I could reach out and grab the individual elements in my music. I have everything I could want in a great set of monitors.
