Reap the Rewards of Long String Life and Amazing Tone

Made with 80/20 bronze wrap wire, D’Addario’s XT 80/20 Bronze acoustic guitar strings are the brightest in the company’s lineup. Descended from the EXP series, these XT strings offer a bright, lively sound with extra-long life. So, how do they do it? Instead of coating the string after the winding process is finished, D’Addario coats the wrap wire before it’s wound onto the hexagonal NY Steel core. The resulting string feels uncoated but retains the long-lasting life of a coated one. XT strings also offer “fusion twist” plain strings that resist detuning and breaking. With a set of XT 80/20 bronze strings, you’re acoustic guitar will sound its best for a longer time span.

The evolution of XT strings

During their lifespan, EXP strings enjoyed a loyal following here at Sweetwater. Now, EXP strings have leveled up to become XT acoustic guitar strings, the next evolution of D’Addario’s world-renowned treated strings. Each string receives a groundbreaking coating for twice the protection. And since the coating is so thin, each string rings out just as loudly and clearly as an uncoated string does. If you're a fan of EXP strings, then you will love D’Addario XT strings.

Hex-core wounds, Fusion Twist steels

Inside each roundwound string in this lies an NY Steel hexagonal core — the same as you'll find on a set of your favorite NYXLs. This angular core gives the wrap wire more surface to grab on to, yielding better tone and intonation. Plain steels in this set also feature D'Addario's Fusion Twist technology. This process prevents slack in the twist, resulting in greater resistance against detuning and breaking.

The right tone for everyone

D’Addario believes that every acoustic guitar player should have a set of strings that match their sonic needs. That’s why they build strings with a range of construction methods and materials. Whether you go with the brightest 80/20 Bronze strings, the mellowest Silk & Steels, or anywhere in between, D’Addario has the perfect sound for everyone. Want to learn more? D’Addario: innovative strings since 1680

When you go with D’Addario, you receive far more than a great set of strings. You’re benefiting from three centuries of string-making experience. The D’Addario family tradition began in 1680 in the tiny town of Salle, Italy, where they made assorted instrument strings for over 200 years before relocating to New York in 1905. Since then, the D’Addario family has become a leader in string innovation. They designed the modern winding machine, introduced ultra-reliable hexagonal core wires, and pioneered the colored-coded ball end movement. More than 300 years since the family started making strings, D’Addario continues to set a global standard for quality and reliability. And every day, more than 500,000 strings emerge from their USA-based workshops.

This may be the one!

So far I'm really pleased with how these sound. They pair extremely well with my guitar and give it a great tone. So great it's honestly hard to describe. They're clean, shimmery, warm, articulate, and resonant. Great for both rhythm and lead. They break in pretty quickly too.

They sound awesome so I'm willing to overlook the slightly higher price. My only experience with coated strings is with elixirs, which don't sound this good. $ a pack isn't horrible if I can get a few weeks of moderate to heavy playing out of them. They really do sound better on my guitar (Martin custom 000 OM-18 reissue, mahogany neck/back/sides, Adirondack spruce top) than any other stings I've tried in recent years. I haven't tried them plugged in yet but I'm sure they'll sound good.

Great Strings

Although I actually can't remember where I bought these strings, as I do most of my online music shopping at Sweetwater I figured I'd leave a review. Unlike the previous reviewer, I really love these strings. I've been playing them for a couple of months now and they still sound great (I always clean my strings after playing with Dunlop 65). I bought a Yamaha FG200 around 3 years ago, as I wanted to get back into fingerstyle after not playing acoustic for 20 years; I figured it would be good enough to start over with. It played well and sounded good but I wanted more brightness out of it. I had my gtr tech replace the nut and saddle with bone (and he also lowered the action a little). After much experimentation, copper bridge pins seemed to help brighten things up a tad and I finally settled on SIT Golden Bronze, which are great strings and inexpensive. All of the changes actually gave me alot more brightness - maybe not as chimey as a Taylor but enough to where I really dig playing it.

Although the SIT strings won out over many other brands, I figured I'd try these XT's just for the heck of it. They sound just as bright as the SIT's and have a more complex midrange. As I stated, so far the tone is holding up and I don't feel any coating come off as the other reviewer stated (I'm not calling him a liar but this is just my experience). I play the Yamaha at least 3 times a week for an hour or two each day.

So, these strings are winning me over. Although they are about $ more than the SIT's, the extra amount of tone might be worth it for me. i'm going to string the Yamaha with SIT's again after these finally get muddy to make a comparison, but so far I'm very happy with these strings. If I was gigging out every week and sweating on them maybe the tone would've died already (and the price might be prohibitive), but I play at home and don't sweat much!!!!
Music background: I have gigged with bands, taught guitar at a music store for 10 years and presently play for fun at home.

Great stability, average lifespan.

Pros:
They have a very quick break-in period. Under 10 minutes.
They stay in tune very well, even on inexpensive guitars.

Cons:
They sound great for the first week, then go dead just like the regular acoustic strings.
The coating leaves gaps between the wraps and debris still builds up there and kills tone.

Buy them if you value the tuning stability and quick settling.
Otherwise a stick with the regular acoustic line.
